After School Matters is a prominent nonprofit organization based in Chicago, dedicated to providing after-school and summer programs for high school teens. Our mission is to empower nearly 19,000 teens annually, helping them to explore their talents and acquire essential skills for future success.

We pride ourselves on offering high-quality paid apprenticeships in various fields, including arts, communications, leadership, sports, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).

Summary of the Role:
We are seeking dedicated, part-time instructors to facilitate our American Sign Language program for high school participants aged 14 to 20. This advanced apprenticeship will cover essential vocabulary, foundational grammar, and the nuances of facial expressions and body language in ASL. Instructors will guide students in understanding the significance of Deaf Culture and the fundamentals of ASL.

Program Schedule:
The program sessions are structured as follows:

  • Summer: 6 to 7 weeks, Monday through Friday, four instructional hours daily, with additional hours for planning and professional development.
  • Fall: 10 weeks, Monday through Friday (after school) and/or Saturday, with 60-90 instructional hours.
  • Spring: 10 weeks, Monday through Friday (after school) and/or Saturday, with 60-90 instructional hours.
  • Saturday-only programs: Limited opportunities available.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Introduce a diverse group of teens to various aspects of education, linguistics, and communication while fostering a safe and collaborative environment.
  • Stay informed about current trends in education, linguistics, and communication technologies.
  • Design and supervise weekly lessons focused on Deaf culture, ASL vocabulary, grammar, and body language.
  • Plan and implement enriching field trips, master classes, and guest visits to enhance the learning experience.
  • Oversee teens during program activities and field trips.
  • Maintain open communication with the After School Matters Program Specialist regarding any issues or updates.
  • Attend all required planning and program meetings, including orientation and professional development sessions.
  • Participate in the recruitment and selection process for teen program participants.
  • Track program activities, including attendance and evaluations, using an online data system.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Duties:
Maintain a supervision ratio of approximately 15 teens per instructor.

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in ASL: A strong command of American Sign Language, including grammar, vocabulary, and effective communication.
  • Understanding of Deaf Culture: Knowledge of the norms, values, and history of the Deaf community.
  • Teaching Skills: Effective lesson planning and classroom management abilities.
  • Communication Skills: Strong ability to convey information clearly to teens.
  • Patience and Empathy: Supportive and encouraging demeanor, understanding the challenges of learning a new language.
  • Customer Service Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders.

Physical and Work Environment:
Employees may need to sit or stand for extended periods. The work environment is typically moderate to loud, with no exposure to adverse weather conditions.
