About the Role:
- You will teach a curriculum that prioritizes analysis of World, US History, American Government, and Economics, preparing students for Advanced Placement (AP) and collegiate-level coursework.
- You will facilitate student-led discourse on historical topics, encouraging critical thinking and debate.
- You will guide students in understanding author claims and sourcing while developing argumentation, corroboration, inquiry, and historiography skills through primary and secondary source analysis.
- You will build a positive and inclusive classroom environment where students feel empowered to express evidence-based opinions and perspectives.
- You will collaborate with the History department to set academic and engagement goals for students.

- You will meet regularly with your principal and/or instructional coach to analyze and respond to trends in student work samples and assessments.
- You will learn and implement strategies to differentiate instruction for all learners in your classroom.
School Culture and Community:
- You will build strong relationships with students to ensure they feel seen, loved, and heard.
- You will partner with families to provide support and resources for students' learning needs.
- You will engage in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
- You will participate in weekly school-wide meetings to cultivate community, model core values, and encourage student achievement.
- You will collaborate with your grade level team to develop academic goals and practice instructional strategies.
Requirements:
- A commitment to Uncommon Schools' mission and investment in our vision for being an anti-racist organization.
- A demonstrated commitment to supporting students' social-emotional and academic development.
- An enthusiasm for collaborating with internal and external partners to benefit students.
- A self-directed learner who seeks and implements feedback to improve outcomes and achieve objectives.
- Required Experience:
- A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities (1-2 years experience preferred).
- Academic expertise in Education, History, Geography, Political Science, Criminal Justice, Social Sciences, or the Humanities.
- Prior to starting employment, you must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Teacher certification is not a prerequisite for consideration at Uncommon Schools in New Jersey, but you do need to meet state certification eligibility requirements (a final undergraduate or graduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 for graduates on or after September 1, 2016, or 2.75 if you graduated prior to September 1, 2016). All instructional staff are required to become certified in New Jersey within a reasonable period after beginning employment.
Compensation:
The estimated salary range for this position is between $56,000 and $77,000 annually, depending on relevant experience, education, certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools.
Benefits:
- We offer comprehensive benefits, including generous paid time off, extensive training and development opportunities, choice of health insurance plans, pre-tax flexible spending accounts, financial planning tools, dependent care FSA, paid leave of absence, mental health and counseling support, and wellness benefits.
