Key ResponsibilitiesThe selected candidate will be responsible for:
- Conducting daily maintenance of garden displays, which includes tasks such as planting, pruning, watering, fertilizing, propagating, transplanting, weeding, soil amending, mulching, litter management, pest control, and pathway maintenance, all while considering wildlife habitats and visitor safety.
- Managing daily care for assigned garden areas, coordinating with the Senior Manager of Horticulture to identify and schedule tasks, and planning for seasonal activities as necessary.
- Safely operating and maintaining various hand tools and small machinery, including string trimmers, lawn mowers, and chainsaws, while promptly reporting any maintenance needs.
- Assisting in the maintenance and operation of a computerized irrigation system, troubleshooting issues, and performing necessary repairs.
- Monitoring and addressing plant pests and diseases utilizing Integrated Pest Management techniques.
- Contributing to the design and selection of plants for garden displays.
- Training and supervising volunteers and interns involved in garden care, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and participating in scheduled safety training sessions.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A minimum of a two-year technical degree in horticulture, landscape management, or a closely related field.
- At least two years of experience in garden maintenance.
- A combination of education and practical experience may be considered.
- Proficiency in using and maintaining a variety of gardening tools and equipment.
- A comprehensive understanding of horticultural principles, practices, and sustainable landscape maintenance techniques.
- Familiarity with a diverse range of ornamental plants native to Southern California, with a preference for knowledge of California native species.
- Ability to program smart irrigation controllers and conduct repairs on irrigation systems.
- Basic computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Flexibility to work varied hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required.
- Willingness to work on-site, as this role is essential for museum operations.
