Position Overview

Summary:

The Certified Surgical Technologist plays a crucial role in the surgical team by performing a range of technical tasks to support the preparation and care of patients undergoing surgery. This includes ensuring the patient's skin is properly prepared in accordance with established hospital protocols. The technologist is responsible for maintaining strict aseptic techniques and actively monitoring the surgical environment to prevent any breaches in these practices. Providing emotional support and comfort to patients is also a key responsibility, as well as safely transporting them to and from the Operating Room. The technologist must position patients appropriately based on the surgical procedure and manage biological specimens effectively. Additionally, they are tasked with preparing the Operating Room by organizing tables, instruments, and supplies tailored to each specific case.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Under the supervision of a registered nurse, carry out all tasks related to direct patient care and assistance in the Operating Room before and during surgical procedures.
  • Proficiency in scrubbing for multiple specialty areas such as Transplants, Open Heart, Urology, Neurology, Titanium Rib, and Robotics is highly desirable.
  • Establish and uphold the sterile field, passing instruments and sutures to the surgeon, and assisting as needed.
  • Utilize the physician preference card as a foundational guide when preparing for surgical cases.
  • Ensure that preference cards are consistently updated and comprehensive.
  • Collaborate effectively as part of the surgical team to provide optimal patient care.
  • Engage in team planning and execution of surgical procedures.
  • Maintain a safe surgical environment by adhering to technical and aseptic protocols.
  • Exhibit clinical expertise in the handling and care of all surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Follow Universal Barrier Precautions to ensure safety for both patients and staff in all clinical situations.
  • Demonstrate the ability to monitor and manage the surgical environment, ensuring compliance with traffic control, dress codes, and sanitation policies.
  • Familiarize oneself with facility policies regarding the decontamination, processing, and sterilization of surgical instruments and supplies.
  • Show competence in performing assigned patient care tasks that align with the specific needs of the patient population served.
  • Adapt patient assessment and care methods to meet the diverse physical, psychosocial, cultural, and developmental needs of each patient.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education and Skills

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program is required.

Experience

  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

  • BLS certification is required.
  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist from The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting must be obtained within 180 days of graduation or a valid LVN/LPN License is required.
