Position Overview

Role Summary
The Veterans Benefits Coordinator plays a pivotal role in managing and facilitating financial aid programs specifically designed for veterans and their dependents. This position is essential in ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations while providing exceptional service to our veteran community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the Director of Financial Aid to regularly assess and refine internal protocols related to veterans' benefits, ensuring they meet all regulatory requirements.
  • Actively participate in the decision-making processes associated with the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Department of Defense (DoD), ensuring a high standard of service delivery to veterans.
  • Oversee the reconciliation processes for various veteran benefit programs, including Post 911, Chapter 35, Chapter 31, MIA/POW, Illinois Veterans Grant, Illinois National Guard, and ROTC.
  • Provide timely and accurate responses to requests related to the 85/15 report and surveys from Veterans Affairs, while maintaining updated MOU documentation with the DoD.
  • Assess and apply the appropriate benefit types for each veteran based on their eligibility as defined by Veterans Affairs.
  • Monitor and prevent the over-awarding of veterans' benefits.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of campus initiatives aimed at supporting veterans and their families.
  • Engage in community outreach events to promote available services for veterans.
  • Participate in required training sessions, conferences, and quarterly meetings organized by Veterans Affairs.
  • Assist in the management and operation of the Veterans Resource Center.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. A Bachelor's degree in business, communications, humanities, social sciences, or a closely related field.
  2. A minimum of one year of professional experience in student services, financial aid, or a related field within higher education.
  3. Additional education or experience may be required based on the specific needs of the position.

Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Candidates should possess a strong understanding of:
  • Scholarship and federal aid programs.
  • Computerized financial aid systems.
  • Data compilation and report preparation.
  • The general operations of higher education institutions.

Physical Requirements
This role primarily involves sedentary work, which includes sitting and standing for extended periods.

Work Environment
The position is based in a standard office environment with no adverse conditions expected.
