Position Overview
The Rail Operations Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the activities of train crews engaged in the switching of railroad cars within a yard or similar environment. This role is crucial for ensuring the efficient loading and unloading of cars, as well as the assembly and disassembly of trains, while maintaining safety and operational standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the activities of train crews.
- Receive and interpret instructions from management regarding car switching operations.
- Communicate switching orders to the crew using various methods, including radio and hand signals.
- Utilize RMI reports to manage cars effectively.
- Ensure the accuracy of daily train lists generated by customer service and completed by train crews.
- Maintain timely and accurate reporting, including crew work sheets and operational reports.
- Approve and submit man hours for personnel under supervision.
- Conduct thorough investigations of accidents and incidents, providing detailed reports and recommendations.
- Analyze cost factors affecting railroad operations and their impact on financial performance.
- Adjust locomotive requirements based on daily operational needs to optimize fuel efficiency.
- Stay informed about track conditions and their implications for productivity.
- Exhibit consistent and reliable attendance.
- Apply knowledge of federal railroad regulations and safety guidelines.
- Effectively communicate safety rules and operational procedures to team members.
- Train switching crews and yard personnel on job responsibilities and compliance with regulations.
- Make informed decisions in emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Engage professionally with colleagues and railroad officials.
- Promote a culture of safety and compliance within the organization.
- Oversee the operational testing program to ensure adherence to safety practices.
- Complete required training and assessments.
- Perform additional duties as necessary.
Equipment and Safety Gear:
Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety vests, safety glasses, flame-resistant clothing, gloves, and steel-toed boots are required.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED, with a minimum of 6 months of relevant experience, or a combination of education and experience.
- Must successfully complete training and required evaluations.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Current locomotive engineer and conductor certification is required.
- A valid state driver's license is necessary.
Work Environment:
This position involves exposure to outdoor weather conditions, noise, and fumes typical of railroad operations.
