The Medical Assistant will support healthcare providers in various patient care functions, ensuring a high level of patient satisfaction through effective communication and organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist patients during their visit, including:
    • Escorting patients to examination or procedure rooms.
    • Providing assistance with mobility, dressing, specimen collection, and preparation for examinations.
    • Gathering patient information and medical history, including vital signs and screenings as per provider protocols.
    • Communicating instructions to patients and their families.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA and other regulatory standards.
  • Obtain and manage lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral documentation.
  • Complete necessary forms and requisitions.
  • Organize and maintain patient charts, ensuring all information is accurately filed.
  • Schedule appointments and verify insurance details and patient demographics.
  • Prepare examination rooms and ensure all instruments and equipment are set up according to established protocols.
  • Maintain cleanliness and infection control by sanitizing rooms and equipment between patient visits.
  • Manage inventory of medical supplies and restock as needed.
  • Coordinate patient flow and check schedules to optimize efficiency.
  • Respond to phone inquiries and provide relevant patient education as directed.
  • Assist healthcare providers with clinical procedures.
  • Adhere to all regulatory agency requirements (e.g., OSHA, CLIA, Department of Health).
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding medical records and sensitive information.
  • Follow all UPMC Health System policies and procedures.
  • Administer medications and vaccines under physician supervision when appropriate.
  • Perform additional front office duties as necessary.
  • Exhibit behaviors in line with system-wide competencies.
  • Complete other assigned tasks as needed.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with medical terminology, examination, diagnostic, and treatment room responsibilities are essential.

For Senior Medical Assistant:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant Program or equivalent training (LPN/RN/EMT) is necessary, or successful completion of a certification examination (AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, or NHA), or at least one year of relevant patient care experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in three specific tasks related to practice categories is required.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic, and treatment room responsibilities are essential.

Applicants will be evaluated for appropriate job title and salary based on their experience and education within the Medical Assistant Career Ladder.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR certification is required based on AHA standards, including both theoretical and practical components within 30 days of hire.
  • Clearances must be obtained within 90 days.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification is required.
  • Act 34 clearance is necessary.
