Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Transportation Planner 5 to join our team at CDM Smith. As a key member of our transportation planning group, you will contribute to the development of innovative transportation solutions that meet the needs of our clients and communities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the acquisition of transportation data, including demographic, economic, land use, and environmental data.
  • Perform and document complex traffic analysis and forecasting for urban streets, transit systems, and highway projects.
  • Complete roadway traffic and transit analyses and modeling using Vissim, Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, and other travel demand modeling packages.
  • Use results from traffic and transit modeling to recommend roadway and intersection configurations, signal timing, and service needs.
  • Conduct roadway safety analysis using the Highway Safety Manual.
  • Prepare new business proposals and assist with developing CAD drawings.
  • Assist with developing, calibrating, or validating four-step travel demand models.
  • Participate in planning studies, traffic analyses, and tolling studies with nationwide clients.
  • Assist with project grant writing and analyses support for FTA and FHWA grants.
  • Compile and analyze safety crash data to provide concepts and recommendations to address and decrease crash rates.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to junior staff and develop them for future growth within the discipline and firm.
  • Review transportation plans for compliance with applicable local, state, and federal laws.
  • Develop 3D renderings to show transportation improvement alternatives.
  • Act as a task manager or project technical lead, applying CDM Smith's project management techniques and quality management procedures.
  • Participate in transportation planning research through attending conferences and seminars and/or publishing technical papers.
  • Develop scripts to analyze large datasets using R, Python, and ArcGIS Online.
Requirements
  • Masters degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering, Urban, Community, or Regional Planning, or a related field, and at least 6 years of experience as a Transportation Planner or in a related role.
  • At least 5 years of experience with traffic engineering.
  • At least 5 years of modeling experience using Vissim and Synchro traffic simulation software.
  • At least 5 years of experience in traffic safety analysis and generating crash maps using ArcGIS.
  • At least 3 years of experience in statistical modeling using tools like SPSS, R, and/or Python.
