Petco Veterinary Assistant Job Description

At Petco, we're dedicated to improving the lives of pets, pet parents, and our team members. As a Veterinary Assistant, you'll play a critical role in providing exceptional medical care to our patients and delivering outstanding customer service to their owners.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide excellent medical care to patients and phenomenal customer care to their owners
  • Represent the mission and values of Petco to all clients
  • Assist doctors with appointments, surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia
  • Perform patient restraint, obtain and process laboratory samples, and handle and dispense medications
  • Schedule appointments, provide client education, and relay test results to doctors and clients
  • Help prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures and assist doctors and/or veterinary technicians in anesthetizing patients
  • Under supervision, perform in-hospital treatments for sick patients, including giving injectable and oral medications and intravenous fluid therapy
Requirements:
  • Previous experience working in veterinary practice or sufficient relatable animal care experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Compassion and sympathy, with the ability to maintain a professional attitude and demeanor during emotional and stressful situations
  • Telephone and computer skills
  • Ability to work as a team player, willing to learn new techniques and treatments, offer creative ideas, and accept change
Work Environment:

The majority of job duties are conducted in the Veterinary Hospital. Position requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 pounds, as necessary), and standing for long periods of time.
