We are actively seeking Youth Counselors for our facilities, which are situated in northern Wisconsin, in proximity to various communities.

Upon hiring, candidates will undergo a comprehensive six-week training program designed to equip them for their roles as Youth Counselors. This training encompasses essential skills such as report writing, effective communication, proven strategies for engaging with youth, adherence to employee conduct standards, and practical training at our facilities.

Position Overview

Under general supervision, this role entails executing security and safety responsibilities within a juvenile correctional facility. Daily operations may be guided by a Lead Worker. Responsibilities include supervising juvenile residents across all shifts to uphold the security of the facility, safeguarding institutional property, and ensuring the safety of staff, youth, and the public during approved off-site activities. Additionally, the role involves meeting the basic needs of assigned youth in terms of nutrition, clothing, and overall health; providing case management support and various treatment services; and maintaining order and discipline within the facility. Physical intervention may be necessary with youth exhibiting aggressive behavior. This position may also involve managing the institution's Control Center and may require performing duties associated with the Youth Counselor Advanced role as directed.

Compensation Details

This position falls within pay schedule/range 05-31, offering a starting base salary of $33.66 per hour, along with an additional $3.00 per hour add-on. Employees may also qualify for a temporary $5.00 per hour add-on.

Job Requirements

Applicants must possess legal authorization to work in the United States (i.e., a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship) at the time of application.

The Department of Corrections may conduct pre-employment drug screenings. Any applicant offered a position requiring such a screening must successfully pass it as a condition of employment.

Additionally, the Department will perform criminal background checks on candidates prior to selection. All new employees are subject to fingerprinting upon hire.

As public safety personnel, remote work is not an option for these roles.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age upon appointment.
  • No felony convictions without a pardon.
  • No domestic violence convictions.
  • Must pass a drug test.
  • Ability to work overtime is required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is necessary.

A qualified candidate will ensure the order, safety, and security of juvenile offenders, staff, and the institution while supervising youth in life skills and daily activities, and providing counseling and treatment services to offenders.
