Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Clinical Support Technician 3 to join our team at the University of Rochester. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for the pre-analytical processing of patient specimens, ensuring the integrity and accuracy of test results.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Sample Management
  • Receive and prioritize specimens from inpatient and outpatient locations, ensuring timely processing and analysis.
  • Use knowledge of test menus to identify and handle stat/urgent specimens and those requiring special handling.
  • Take appropriate action to maintain specimen integrity and ensure accurate test results.
  • Track and receive batches, verifying receipt of specimens and ensuring accurate documentation.
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers to troubleshoot problem specimens and clarify correct test selection.
  • Provide excellent customer service, answering questions from specimen collection locations regarding transport and minimum volumes.
  • Inform ordering providers when ordered tests cannot be performed and work to remedy the situation.
  • Prepare specimens for transport to specialized areas of testing, such as specialty labs or reference labs.
  • Manage sample archive storage systems and specimen disposal according to laboratory guidelines.
  1. Patient Registration and Specimen Log-in
  • Register patient information into the Hospital Information System (HIS).
  • Identify special registration requirements, such as client billing or research specimens.
  • Register patient billing information and ensure accurate documentation.
  • Log-in laboratory procedure codes as ordered from manual requisitions or electronic orders, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Document discrepancies on patient information, test requests, or specimen information into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  1. Clerical Support
  • Provide excellent customer service, answering telephone calls and responding to routine inquiries regarding test results, testing/specimen requirements, or other technical information.
  • Take action as needed to meet customer requests, including test request add-ons and proper transfer of calls to other destinations.
  • Scan requisitions into the scanning system, confirming readability and keywords.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance data collection as required.
  1. Lab (Technical) Support
  • Assist technologists in the pre-analytical processing of select tests, including centrifugation, separating, and storing of samples.
  • Load continuous blood culture systems for sample processing, as applicable.
  • Monitor environment conditions, including temperature and CO2 levels, in laboratory rooms and equipment.
  • Collaborate with technical teams and supervisors to troubleshoot out-of-range conditions and document results according to laboratory quality control guidelines.
Requirements
  • Associate's degree in Laboratory Sciences and technical training closely related to this position.
  • 1 year of laboratory experience preferred.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology preferred.
