Job Description and Duties

Under general supervision, conducts thorough inspections of motor carriers to ensure compliance with California Highway Patrol administrative regulations related to safety, maintenance, and operational practices. Performs in-depth vehicle inspections for annual certifications and makes recommendations regarding the granting of PUC operating authority. Inspects carrier and chipper facilities for compliance with state and federal regulations pertaining to documentation of hazardous materials and wastes. Prepares comprehensive written reports of inspections conducted and makes detailed investigations of vehicles involved in accidents to determine if cause was mechanical. Assists in preparation of complaints, reports, and exhibits and testifies as a witness in court.

Working Conditions

Will work in inclement weather (heat, rain, etc.) and is required to have a valid California Driver's License (CDL). Must pass a drug screening, background investigation, and medical clearance prior to being hired. Incumbents currently in the classification who are eligible to transfer shall upload a completed and signed CHP 220N, Request for Transfer-Nonuniformed, form to this job control.
