Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Motor Carrier Specialist I checks motor carriers for compliance with California Highway Patrol administrative regulations relating to safety, maintenance, and operational practices. The incumbent performs in-depth vehicle inspections for annual certifications, makes recommendations regarding the granting of PUC operating authority, and inspects carrier and chipper facilities for compliance with state and federal regulations pertaining to documentation of hazardous materials and wastes.

Responsibilities
  • Conducts in-depth vehicle inspections for annual certifications
  • Makes recommendations regarding the granting of PUC operating authority
  • Inspects carrier and chipper facilities for compliance with state and federal regulations
  • Prepares comprehensive written reports of inspections conducted
  • Makes detailed investigations of vehicles involved in accidents to determine if cause was mechanical
  • Assists in preparation of complaints, reports, and exhibits
  • Testifies as a witness in court
Working Conditions

The incumbent is expected to work in inclement weather, including heat, rain, and other adverse conditions.

Requirements
  • A valid California Driver's License (CDL) is required
  • A drug screening must be passed prior to being hired
  • A background investigation must be cleared prior to being hired
  • Medical clearance is required prior to being hired
