Job Summary

The Director of Transportation is responsible for overseeing the transportation program for Township High School District 211, ensuring safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation services for approximately 12,000 students.

This position plays a critical role in managing the transportation staff, fleet operations, route planning, and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal transportation regulations, including safety standards and training requirements.
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and professionalism within the transportation team.
  • Select, supervise, evaluate, and provide training for transportation department staff, including assistant to the director of transportation, supervisor/trainer personnel, bus drivers, aides, mechanics, and clerical personnel.
  • Plan and administer a program of bus inspection, repair, and preventive maintenance, ensuring compliance with state laws and safety standards.
  • Conduct drills and training for staff to ensure readiness in emergency situations.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and vehicle inspections to uphold safety standards and protocol.
  • File reports of bus accidents promptly with the Superintendent and Chief Operating Officer regardless of whether there are injuries.
  • Report to the Principal or designee all discipline cases involving riders both on the bus and at boarding and discharging zones.
  • May recommend termination of bus services for students whose conduct endangers safe and efficient operation of buses.
  • Administer drug/alcohol testing for all district employees whose position requires a commercial driver's license or school bus permit in accordance with the law.
  • Oversee the daily operations of efficient school bus routes and schedules, including regular routes, late service, and charters, ensuring timely, safe, and cost-effective transportation for all students in accordance with District policies.
  • Arrange charter trips for athletics and other school activities in cooperation with the Athletic Directors and Principals.
  • Determine free and fee-based bus riding eligibility, collect fees, and provide bus schedule information to students and parents.
  • Maintain accurate records related to transportation operation, student ridership, transportation expenses, and safety incidents and provide records in fulfilling district, state, Illinois State Board of Education, and federal requirements.
  • Manage transportation budgets, prepare requisitions, and oversee the purchasing of equipment and supplies while ensuring efficient use of resources.
  • Recommend to the Chief Operating Officer vehicle replacement schedules, procedures, equipment, and personnel necessary to maintain a safe and efficient transportation service.
  • Prepare state reports for claim for reimbursement annually.
  • Implement and oversee technology solutions for tracking and managing transportation operations.
Requirements
  • Minimum three years' experience in transportation management
  • Knowledgeable of regular and special education pupil transportation laws and regulations
  • CDL preferred
  • Strong leadership and team management skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to be on-call when District vehicles are in use (includes nights and weekends)
  • Experience with Tyler Traversa, REI/Armor Camera Software, and Geotab GPS Software Systems preferred
