Job Overview

Objective
The Radiation Safety Officer is tasked with spearheading, executing, and overseeing the Radiation Protection (RP) program at the operational level. The primary goal is to safeguard the radiological well-being of staff, contractors, and the public through the secure production, assessment, and distribution of radioactive materials, adhering to federal, state, and local radiation safety laws.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the official Radiation Safety Officer for the site’s radioactive materials license, empowered to enforce radiological policies and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Conduct mandatory confirmatory surveys and provide training for employees to perform these surveys.
  • Lead the site’s Radiation Safety Committee and actively participate in the Safety Committee.
  • Execute complex dosimetry assessments for internal and external exposure as well as skin contamination incidents, ensuring accurate documentation of evaluations and dose assignments.
  • Assess and recommend radiation safety measures for new or upgraded operations, following ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles.
  • Design and deliver radiation safety training programs tailored for various audiences, including introductory and advanced sessions.
  • Maintain comprehensive RP Program surveys and compliance records, ensuring they are complete and timely to monitor radiological conditions and identify trends that may require further scrutiny.
  • Represent the RP Program during radiological incident investigations and project committees, ensuring timely resolution of safety concerns.
  • Facilitate the annual review of the radiation protection program.
  • Conduct radiological investigations and generate reports, identifying root causes and appropriate corrective measures.
  • Act as the primary contact for regulatory inspections of licensed operations, ensuring compliance with existing and forthcoming radiation safety regulations.
  • Provide technical support in RP and EHS matters to site operations and personnel as required.
  • Support and enhance site EHS programs in alignment with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Lead emergency response efforts, offering technical guidance as the Emergency Response Coordinator during radiological and safety emergencies.
  • Provide operational support for unscheduled production runs, including weekend assistance as necessary.
  • Promote adherence to safety protocols and practices, demonstrating effective use of protective equipment and proactively addressing hazards.
  • Ensure adequate cross-training among site technicians, supervisors, and managers to maintain operational coverage.

Qualifications
To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Bachelor's degree in health physics, physical science, engineering, or biological science.
  • A minimum of seven years of direct health physics experience, ideally in a complex manufacturing or research setting.
  • Proven experience in leading Radiation/EHS programs and engaging with regulatory bodies.
  • Certification as a Health Physicist by the American Board of Health Physics is advantageous.
  • OSHA 40-hour General Industry certification is a plus.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite is required.

Skills and Abilities
Successful candidates will demonstrate:

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data and business trends.
  • Knowledge of incident investigation and root cause analysis methodologies.
  • Physical capability to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Qualifications to be recognized as a Radiation Safety Officer by the State or NRC.
  • In-depth understanding of health physics and radiation protection principles.
  • Effective communication skills to relay issues and solutions to all levels of personnel.
  • Experience in delivering exceptional customer service within a business context.
  • Ability to collaborate across various departments and influence high-level decision-making.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% as needed.

Work Environment
The work environment entails:

  • Working in a facility that produces radioactive materials, necessitating participation in safety programs to minimize exposure risks.
  • Flexibility to work outside standard hours, including shifts, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Potential for prolonged periods of sitting or standing during work duties.
  • Occasional physical activities such as kneeling, bending, and reaching.
  • Exposure to various environmental conditions, including mechanical parts and hazardous materials.
  • Requirement to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as necessary.
  • Commitment to completing safety training promptly and working collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
