Overview:

The Environmental, Safety, Health & Quality Directorate is inviting applications for Radiological Safety Engineer positions within the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division.

As a leading U.S. Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, we conduct essential research aimed at providing innovative solutions to significant challenges in energy and security. Our operations include nuclear and radiological facilities that engage in nuclear research and isotope production, supporting various applications in nuclear power, renewable energy, scientific exploration, and medical and industrial isotope generation.

The Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division is in search of Radiological Safety Engineers to deliver technical leadership in radiological protection and field support for research and facility operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in radiological work planning and the establishment of hazard controls
  • Create technical documentation and operational protocols
  • Execute shielding calculations for diverse radiation levels
  • Conduct airflow assessments to enhance equipment positioning
  • Assist in modifications to nuclear facilities and engineering control decisions
  • Review and sanction Radiological Work Permits
  • Offer expertise in glovebox design and air monitoring techniques
  • Participate in emergency operations support and stack monitoring activities
  • Mentor junior personnel and oversee technical projects
  • Ensure the safe execution of research activities while aligning with core organizational values

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years of pertinent experience
  • Familiarity with radiation protection principles and detection instruments
  • Ability to meet physical job requirements and pass a drug screening

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree with a focus on Health Physics
  • Experience within the Department of Energy Complex and implementation of radiation protection programs
  • Strong technical and communication abilities
  • Progressing towards American Board of Health Physics Certification

Special Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
