Position Overview
KIND is seeking a Lead Immigration Counsel to provide high-level expertise and guidance in delivering legal services through KIND attorneys and pro bono partners to unaccompanied minors facing removal proceedings.

This role involves serving as a knowledgeable leader and advisor on intricate and novel legal matters for both internal and external stakeholders. The position may also include supervising Staff Attorneys, Senior Paralegals, and other non-attorney personnel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Offer mentorship to KIND pro bono attorneys and provide direct legal representation to KIND clients. This includes delivering comprehensive consultation and technical support to pro bono attorneys handling KIND cases.
  • Perform essential legal functions such as conducting legal research, formulating case strategies, interviewing clients, representing clients in immigration and state courts, and preparing and filing legal documents.
  • Oversee the work of staff attorneys, fellows, and paralegals, including onboarding, legal training, daily support, and performance evaluations, ensuring high-quality legal services.
  • Facilitate the placement of cases with pro bono attorneys while providing ongoing expert mentoring and training.
  • Engage with community stakeholders and pro bono partners to foster relationships and contribute to the development of guidance materials.
  • Participate in office operations, including attending meetings, serving on committees, and leading in-office events.
  • Manage data integrity through regular audits and oversight of case management systems.
  • Collaborate with the Training and Technical Assistance Team to develop local training materials and assist in conducting training for staff and external partners.
  • Work with Legal Programs Management and other departments to develop and implement grant-funded programs, ensuring compliance with commitments.
  • Represent KIND at local meetings, trainings, and events, contributing to the overall functioning of the legal services program.

Qualifications
Applicants must possess a J.D. and be admitted to the local state bar. Fluency in English is required, with Spanish proficiency preferred.

Candidates should have a minimum of four years of experience in immigration law, including representation in humanitarian claims such as asylum and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status. Experience working with children, particularly immigrant and refugee minors, is essential, along with a background in supervising legal staff.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is necessary, along with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
