Niskayuna, New York, United States Naval Nuclear Laboratory Full time
Company Overview

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a vital component of the U.S. Department of Energy, focusing on the advancement of naval nuclear propulsion technology. Our mission includes providing essential technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of the nation's naval nuclear reactors, as well as training the Sailors who operate these reactors within the U.S. Navy's submarines and aircraft carrier fleets.

With nearly 8,000 dedicated employees across primary locations in Pennsylvania, New York, South Carolina, and Idaho, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has a longstanding commitment to supporting the United States Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. Operated by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC, a subsidiary of Fluor Corporation, we have proudly served the nation since 1946.

Position Overview

This role offers an exciting opportunity for candidates seeking autonomy and significant responsibility, along with hands-on experience in the field. The position entails an initial assignment of approximately 1-2 years at either the Knolls or Bettis Laboratory, followed by a transition into NNL's Field Engineering Program for a 3-5 year assignment in a shipyard environment.

The laboratory assignment is designed to immerse candidates in NNL's electrical engineering community, encompassing support for the design, development, deployment, analysis, troubleshooting, and testing of electrical systems related to power electronics, laboratory test facilities, or site electrical infrastructure.

Successful candidates will be expected to relocate to the Knolls or Bettis Laboratory for about two years before moving on to training and subsequent relocation to a shipyard.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will provide engineering support and independent oversight for work associated with the installation, servicing, testing, and modification of reactor plant systems, components, and safety systems. As RPCO engineers, they will engage during nuclear operations and apply sound engineering principles to influence and provide feedback to on-site management and partner organizations.

Completion of a job-specific qualification is essential for this field engineering position. Training for this qualification is anticipated to take approximately one year, depending on prior experience, and will be conducted at the Knolls or Bettis Laboratory.

Upon successful qualification, the RPCO engineer will be expected to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of requirements and the ability to function effectively in a technical support and oversight capacity in the field.
