Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is in search of a dedicated Paralegal to join the Indigent Defense Commission. This role is pivotal in ensuring the protection and advocacy of our clients' rights through exceptional legal representation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive database of community resources and criminal justice services for client support.
  • Assist legal professionals in formulating bond motions and re-entry strategies for clients in custody.
  • Establish effective systems to connect clients with necessary services and support mitigation efforts.
  • Engage with clients and witnesses under tight deadlines while maintaining a client-focused approach.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare documentation, including legal memoranda for attorneys.
  • Innovatively link clients to various local and regional resources based on their specific needs.
  • Support the Chief and Deputy Public Defender in identifying and addressing gaps in local support networks for indigent individuals involved in the court system.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated analytical skills with the ability to organize and interpret complex information.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Capability to manage a diverse caseload through various stages of legal processes.
  • Experience in legal research and drafting.
  • Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision.
  • Proactive in meeting deadlines and achieving objectives.
  • Willingness to accept constructive feedback and respond effectively to challenges.
  • Proven teamwork skills, contributing to a collaborative criminal defense environment.
  • Commitment to core values such as respect, teamwork, and zealous advocacy.
  • A valid driver's license and ability to travel to various locations as required.

Additional Considerations

  • A four-year degree or paralegal certification from an ABA-accredited program, or relevant paralegal experience, or a Master of Social Work degree from an accredited institution.
  • Familiarity with local service providers, including those addressing substance abuse, mental health, and other social services, or a strong desire to develop this knowledge.
  • Understanding of social services practices and regulations relevant to the Front Royal/Winchester area.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to assess client needs across various domains.
