Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States Astrobotic Technology Full time

About Astrobotic Technology:

Astrobotic is a leader in the field of space exploration and technological innovation. Our capabilities range from lunar vehicles, landers, and infrastructure to spacecraft navigation, machine vision, and computing systems designed for robotic applications in space. The company has secured contracts for multiple lunar missions and has achieved over 60 NASA, DoD, and commercial technology contracts, totaling more than $600 million.

We recently achieved a significant milestone by launching and operating the first American lunar lander mission since the Apollo era. In addition to facilitating America’s return to the Moon, Astrobotic has developed and operates reusable vertical takeoff and landing (VTVL) rockets, continually enhancing next-generation VTVL technologies and advanced rocket propulsion systems. Founded in 2007, Astrobotic is based in Pittsburgh, PA, with a propulsion and testing facility in Mojave, CA.

Position Overview:

Astrobotic Technology is seeking a skilled professional to assist in the integration and testing of our Lunar Landers. The successful candidate will oversee the planning, documentation, and execution of spacecraft-level integration and testing activities. You will implement the complete engineering development cycle and provide regular updates to the Electrical Integration and Testing Lead regarding progress.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform integration and testing of various flight and non-flight electrical systems and avionics hardware, including component-level assessments, engineering and flight model assembly, and board and box level testing.
  • Create and execute detailed procedures to verify physical and functional subsystem/payload/spacecraft interface requirements.
  • Develop and implement custom test scripts.
  • Formulate test procedures, conduct testing, and document results. Enhance testing efficiency and accuracy through automation tools and techniques.
  • Assist in troubleshooting hardware/software configuration and baseline issues during integration and installation phases. Document and investigate root causes of discrepancies found in hardware.
  • Gather and analyze test metrics to contribute to the preparation of test documentation and readiness review presentations.
  • Ensure the safety of equipment and personnel throughout the integration process.
  • Report to the Manager of Integration and Testing, collaborating closely with Systems Engineers, Electrical Design, Mechanical Engineers, and other subsystem leads to ensure integration and testing is executed as planned, delivering a fully certified spacecraft for flight.
  • Support both on-site and off-site testing efforts. Collaborate with external vendors to define interface requirements.

Required Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience in integrating and testing electrical and avionics systems, with a background in Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing.
  • Technical expertise in electromechanical systems, including electrical and mechanical components, sensors, actuators, and control systems.
  • Familiarity with the spaceflight electronic design and development process, and an understanding of complex electronic systems within larger systems.
  • Experience in integration or production environments.
  • Proficiency in writing, debugging, and executing test scripts, along with preparing test result reports.
  • A history of working in integrated teams, with daily interactions among technicians, engineers, managers, and mission directors, along with the ability to lead and mentor a team of electrical integration and testing engineers.
  • Previous collaboration with cross-functional teams, including mechanical design, avionics, harness, and systems engineering, to achieve integration and testing goals.
  • Experience in troubleshooting complex electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with CAD software for reviewing and modifying technical drawings.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant integration and testing experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in creating integration sequences, procedures, and methodologies to ensure a smooth integration process.
  • Experience with large-scale environmental testing, such as thermal vacuum, vibration, and propulsion testing, as well as developing test support equipment.
  • Experience with integration and testing campaigns for spacecraft or satellite projects.
  • IPC-A-600 certification.
  • Knowledge of avionics manufacturing processes, including machining operations, harness fabrication, and inspection processes.
  • Ability to adapt to a startup environment and self-initiate with minimal guidance.
  • Experience in a cleanroom environment classified as 100K or ISO8.
  • Experience in writing test scripts using Python.
