The Atlanta Legal Aid Society seeks a highly skilled and detail-oriented Paralegal to join its Health Law Unit in downtown Atlanta. As a key member of the team, you will play a vital role in improving the health and well-being of low-income individuals living with life-threatening illnesses.

Job Summary

We are looking for a dedicated and organized Paralegal to provide administrative support to the Health Law Unit. This includes screening clients, completing questionnaires, conducting outreach activities, and maintaining accurate records.

Responsibilities
  • Screen clients and complete questionnaires for Social Security, housing, employment, domestic relations, public benefits, and estate planning cases;
  • Conduct off-site outreach at various locations;
  • Handle internal referrals to the Health Law Unit;
  • Create and maintain the monthly intake and outreach schedule;
  • Case handling, including providing clients with information and advice under attorney supervision;
  • Prepare closing letters and draft conflict letters;
  • Assist attorneys during estate planning execution and with document preparation, organization, trial binders, notarization, and medical records requests;
  • Making home, hospital, or hospice visits when clients are unable to come into the office;
  • Data management, including accurately entering new case information into the client database;
  • File management, including scanning documents into the client database, filing, and archiving closed cases;
  • Train new employees and interns on case management systems and establish their account login;
  • Request computer access and key cards for new employees and interns;
Requirements
  • An undergraduate degree or paralegal certificate is preferred but not required;
  • Excellent organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, excellent computer skills, high proficiency with word processing and accurate data entry, and experience with the Google Suite;
  • Excellent writing; communication and listening skills; ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, doctors, social workers, and hospital staff;
  • Ability to work on a team and alone; adaptability; appreciation of diversity; and a demonstrated interest in or experience working with low-income persons;
  • Previous work with persons who have serious health conditions and knowledge of health and poverty law are preferred;
  • Experience with law office management software, and proficiency in languages other than English and willingness to improve language skills are highly valued;
