About the Team

At OpenAI, our Human Data Team is dedicated to creating custom data solutions that drive groundbreaking research. Our work enhances and evaluates our flagship models and products, contributing to safety initiatives through collaboration with our Preparedness and Safety Systems teams.

We design, develop, and maintain the production-quality platform necessary to generate data at scale. The team is responsible for data management tools, operations, data quality, and research on techniques for data collection.

We capture data from various sources to train our models, across multiple modalities, and to train AI. We need to build a scalable set of internal tools and platforms to ensure the distribution and quality of this data, which comes from both synthetic and human experts across many domains.

About the Role

In this role, you will:

  • Serve as the technical lead for Human Data, collaborating with product managers, researchers, and the engineering team to create new products or platforms around emerging research capabilities and unsolved customer needs.
  • Architect, build, and design our tooling, infrastructure, products, and evaluations that power our data collection and management platform, including collecting important training signals from products like ChatGPT, Dall-E, and Sora.
  • Iterate rapidly to improve user and developer experience for our internal team and partner research teams, advancing scalability, performance, observability, and security.
  • Understand training and evaluation data needs from across OpenAI and research opportunities to improve our platform, and help develop our technical roadmap and prioritization.
  • Mentor senior engineers and technical leads, especially in building scalable systems, building optimal tools, and prioritization and strategy.
  • Help drive high-leverage projects for our team and ensure our team engagement is high and technical and organizational blockers are resolved and milestones are delivered.
  • Ensure our data collection platform is secure, scalable, highly available, and maximally useful.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA, and we use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week, offering relocation assistance to new employees.

  • Have past experience as a technical lead of a larger organization, serving as the technical lead for a large team of engineers or multiple engineering groups concurrently.
