POSITION SUMMARY

Under general oversight, the Law Enforcement Officer is responsible for a diverse range of police functions, which include but are not limited to: patrolling designated areas to uphold laws and regulations, ensuring public safety, safeguarding individuals and property, preventing, identifying, and investigating criminal activities, maintaining public order, apprehending offenders, engaging in community policing initiatives, undertaking special assignments, and executing other related law enforcement responsibilities as necessary.


SUPERVISION
Receives general guidance from a designated supervisor. Technical and functional oversight may be provided by other appointed personnel within the police department.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Completion of a recognized Peace Officer Training Academy is essential. The following tasks are typical for this role.

Incumbents may not perform all listed tasks and may be required to undertake additional or different responsibilities to meet organizational needs and evolving practices.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Employing various patrol techniques, including but not limited to vehicular, bicycle, and foot patrol to respond to dispatch calls regarding traffic incidents and other emergencies; observing, monitoring, and managing routine and unusual traffic situations; assisting and advising motorists, and enforcing traffic regulations.

Coordinating and executing thorough investigations of crimes involving minors and adults, offenses against individuals and property, and violations related to vice, gambling, and narcotics, including thefts, burglaries, robberies, accidents, fatalities, and similar occurrences.

Gathering and preserving evidence at crime and accident scenes; collecting fingerprints, creating sketches, and capturing photographs.

Making arrests as required; interviewing victims, complainants, and witnesses; interrogating suspects; searching and transporting detainees; providing testimony and presenting evidence in judicial proceedings; serving legal documents; maintaining current knowledge of laws and procedures related to warrant processing; retrieving and requesting information concerning arrests and legal documents; filing complaints and performing other tasks related to the processing of misdemeanor and felony cases.

Upholding laws and regulations, detecting and investigating offenses, maintaining order, protecting individuals and property; developing community-oriented strategies for crime prevention.

Collaborating and communicating with other law enforcement agencies regarding the apprehension of suspects and the investigation of offenses.

Preparing documentation of arrests, activities, and unusual incidents.

Stopping drivers operating vehicles in violation of laws; advising drivers against unlawful practices; issuing citations and making arrests as necessary.

Maintaining communication with citizens regarding potential law enforcement issues and fostering positive relationships with the community.
Preparing written reports on accidents, offenses, arrests, and property impounded.
Utilizing computer systems and related software applications.
Inspecting establishments serving alcoholic beverages and entertainment for compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Intervening in disputes to protect the public and maintain order.
Participating in training and related programs as directed.

Exercising safety and precaution in the execution of law enforcement duties in accordance with departmental procedures and citywide safety policies.

Performing other related duties as assigned.

ABILITIES


Interpret and apply current laws regarding arrest, search, and seizure, as well as relevant local, county, state, and other regulations.

Interpret and apply existing criminal laws, codes, ordinances, and policies with particular reference to the apprehension, arrest, and custody of individuals committing misdemeanors and felonies, including rules of evidence related to search and seizure and preservation of evidence in traffic and criminal cases.

Safely utilize and maintain firearms, equipment, tools, and supplies; think and act swiftly and safely in emergencies, exercise caution in all law enforcement activities; and administer first aid and CPR as necessary.

Observe and accurately recall critical details, including names, facts, faces, numbers, incidents, and locations, and make sound judgments regarding situations and individuals;
Apply standard procedures for police radio communication;
Understand and execute oral and written instructions independently;

Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the essential functions of this role as mandated by training standards.

Present oral reports and prepare thorough, accurate, and detailed written documentation in a structured format;
Utilize and apply sound judgment in a variety of typical and/or unusual circumstances;

Collaborate effectively with others, including colleagues, community members, and officials from other agencies, the general public, and those encountered during the course of work.

Education and Experience
Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

EDUCATION:
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent educational qualifications. Completion of a recognized Basic Academy Certificate.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:
Possession of a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Typical office and field tools and equipment include:

Computer, keyboard, and monitor; various printers and copiers; telephone or cell phone; pager; print kit; calculator; two-way radio; patrol vehicle, including computer and printer; paper shredder; specialized software; car radio; and other necessary equipment and tools to effectively perform responsibilities.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work of all sworn personnel may involve risks.

When performing Law Enforcement Officer duties, incumbents may transition from a seated position in a patrol vehicle to an active position and back again.

STANDING:
Typically, incumbents stand while taking reports, interacting with citizens, and directing traffic.

WALKING:
Typically, incumbents walk while responding to incidents at homes, businesses, or other locations to take reports. Incumbents also walk while returning to their patrol vehicles.

Incumbents walk within police facilities for various tasks such as filing reports, attending briefings, or during training.


SITTING:
Typically, incumbents spend considerable time seated while operating a patrol vehicle. Most of the officer's time may be spent in a police vehicle. Occasionally, individuals may invite incumbents to sit while taking reports.

Incumbents may also sit while waiting at medical facilities during the treatment of an arrested individual or while performing office tasks and report writing.


STOOPING/BENDING:
Typically, incumbents may need to stoop or bend at crime scenes or while taking cover.

They may also need to lift uncooperative detainees or assume awkward positions to place individuals under arrest.


LIFTING:

Incumbents may need to lift detainees if they are uncooperative, particularly in cases involving individuals under the influence of substances.

Occasionally, it may be necessary to assist another officer in lifting or moving detainees or evidence, which may weigh up to 165 pounds.

Items such as evidence or recovered stolen property may also need to be lifted on occasion.


CARRYING:

Incumbents may need to carry detainees if they are uncooperative or unable to walk independently.

They also carry equipment on their duty belts, which may weigh up to 30 pounds, including portable radios, handcuffs, batons, flashlights, and extra ammunition.

This additional weight can contribute to fatigue during shifts.

Incumbents may also need to carry various equipment during their duties.


PUSHING/PULLING:
Incumbents may need to push stalled vehicles off roadways to prevent traffic hazards.

BALANCING:

Incumbents must demonstrate balance while navigating roofs, fences, or ledges when pursuing suspects. They may also need to climb ladders and demonstrate balance during field sobriety examinations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
