Position Overview

This role offers a merit-based remote work opportunity, allowing flexibility to work from home up to three days a week after initial in-person training.

As a leading insurance provider, Auto-Owners Insurance is looking for an enthusiastic underwriting trainee. This position involves applying insurance regulations, guidelines, and coverage options to facilitate the underwriting decision-making process in alignment with the company's underwriting philosophy. The role includes comprehensive training and development through the completion of the company's underwriter training program for the designated line of insurance, requiring the individual to:

  • Understand various insurance coverages and policies, along with company procedures, to make informed underwriting decisions.
  • Interpret and analyze documents such as policies, manuals, forms, and endorsements to grasp their significance and application.
  • Gather information, formulate opinions, and articulate decisions with sound reasoning and judgment.
  • Evaluate loss history, financial conditions, and risk characteristics.
  • Gain a foundational understanding of supporting areas within the underwriting department.
  • Communicate effectively with independent agents and colleagues through both verbal and written communication.
  • Engage in and successfully complete the company's underwriter training program.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in property/casualty underwriting.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and make independent decisions.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficient in report writing and correspondence.
  • Adept at resolving complex issues.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development through approved educational programs.
