The Utah State University Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is looking for an undergraduate student specializing in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering to collaborate with experienced Mechanical Engineers and Scientists. The role involves the design, analysis, manufacturing, assembly, and testing of hardware projects within the Civil Space (CVS) division.

This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in significant missions that contribute to both NASA's goals and the Department of Defense's initiatives. SDL has a long-standing history of supporting critical missions that benefit humanity and national security.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the design, analysis, fabrication, and assembly of prototype and engineering units, as well as flight-like and ground support equipment (GSE) hardware.
  • Document and present findings from work activities.
  • Support the testing of related hardware components.
  • Help create technical drawings, manage parts tracking, and prepare kitting processes.
  • Develop test procedures and compile reports.
Required Qualifications:
  • Must be a student at USU pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field.
  • Must have at least one year of academic study remaining.
  • Student employees are expected to work 20 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during breaks.
  • Availability for graveyard shifts and weekends may be required for specific testing activities.
  • Must have successfully completed an engineering CAD course with a grade of B or higher.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite is essential.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision after training.
  • Capability to collaborate effectively within a team of students and professionals.
  • Strong communication skills to interact professionally with colleagues.
  • Demonstrated accountability for tasks and outcomes.
  • Self-motivated, reliable, and detail-oriented.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, or other U.S. person.
  • Hands-on experience with basic tools is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in machine shops or fabrication environments.
  • Interest in drafting metallic components and assemblies for production.
  • Long-term interest in solid mechanics and precision structures.
  • Interest in thermal analysis, including radiative and conductive methods.
  • Long-term interest in precision design and fabrication techniques.
