We are seeking a highly skilled HVAC Mechanic II to join our team at the Texas Department of Public Safety. As an HVAC Mechanic II, you will be responsible for performing complex heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) work, including operation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical and electrical control systems and components of HVAC equipment.
Key Responsibilities- Overhaul, remove, and replace, and/or repair air conditioning, heating, and ventilation equipment.
- Repair, inspect, and maintain steam and hot water boilers, and all auxiliary steam and hot water equipment.
- Install or remove and replace electrical control wiring and high voltage wiring within the equipment.
- Monitor direct-digital-control (DDC) software unique to each piece of HVAC equipment to allow computer monitoring and remote adjustments for comfort and precision cooling and heating.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance services on equipment.
- Test refrigeration equipment to determine if there are leaks and to locate and repair sources of recognized leaks.
- Maintain records and prepare correspondence and reports related to work orders, repairs, installations, service, and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) compliance.
- Attend special training sessions, read manuals, and question vendor representatives to learn the technology, capabilities, and limitations of new types of controls.
- Travel to remote Department facilities, work hours beyond and other than normal work hours, including holidays and weekends, and respond to off-hours call-ins.
- Graduation from High School Diploma/equivalent.
- Minimum of three (3) years' full-time progressively responsible work experience operating, servicing, and repairing HVAC and boiler equipment in commercial or residential facilities.
- Considerable knowledge of HVAC equipment and systems, and ability to diagnose malfunctioning units and perform maintenance on all types of HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
- Knowledge of HVAC Refrigeration codes (Uniform Mechanical Code) and ability to comply with TDLR laws and regulations as it pertains to steam and hot water boilers as well as EPA standards as it applies to refrigerants.
- Ability to estimate materials and labor on HVAC and refrigeration jobs.
- ACR Contractor license through Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) (HVAC Class A or B License) preferred.
- EPA 608 Type 3 or Universal certification required and/or obtained within six (6) months of employment.
- R410A Refrigerant certification required and/or obtained within six (6) months of employment.

The employee will be required to work in a variety of environments, including indoors and outdoors, in small, confined and sometimes dirty and dimly-lit spaces, and in heat or cold for extended periods of time. The employee will also be required to stand, sit, and work in awkward and various positions for extended periods of time, bend, stoop, climb or crawl in tight quarters, and climb and work from ladders or other overhead areas.
The employee will be required to lift, carry, and/or transfer weights up to 100 pounds, speak, hear, and exercise visual acuity, and utilize fine motor skills and grasp of testing equipment and small tools/objects.
