Job Summary

Yale New Haven Health is seeking a skilled Phlebotomist to join our team. As a Phlebotomist, you will be responsible for collecting blood and other specimens from patients for laboratory testing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect blood and other specimens from patients using appropriate techniques and equipment.
  • Identify, collect, transport, and dispose of specimens in accordance with internal and external policies and regulations.
  • Organize and prioritize work to provide optimal patient care while adhering to established guidelines for specimen procurement, safety, and correct identification.
  • Recognize and evaluate the presence of complications in collecting blood and select appropriate solutions for them.
  • Perform all duties precisely and efficiently under continually changing conditions.
  • Instruct patients who require special testing and instruct outpatients in proper collection of specimens for testing.
  • Responsible for proper care and use of hospital equipment.
  • Collect specimens and perform select point of care testing on inpatients and emergency department patients.
  • Drive hospital vehicle or own vehicle to service patients requiring blood work.
  • Adhere to all safety procedures in the handling of hazardous materials and blood-borne pathogens.
  • Follow all procedures on safe patient interactions and body mechanics.
  • Maintain clean, well-stocked working areas in main lab, outpatient lab, and emergency department.
  • Meet performance expectations for customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, and staff and self-development.
Requirements
  • High school diploma. Formal education and/or clinical training from an approved phlebotomy program preferred.
  • Previous phlebotomy experience and/or phlebotomy certification required.
  • Must have a current driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • ASCP certification preferred.
