About the Role

Louis Plung & Company is seeking a highly skilled Tax Manager to join our team. As a Tax Manager, you will be responsible for managing multiple tax projects simultaneously, scheduling, staffing, and coordinating workflow. You will develop and train staff, make associations to develop new business for the firm, and ensure compliance with tax law on all tax returns prepared.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage all tax-related facets of client projects/engagements in an efficient, timely, and professional manner.
  • Plan, schedule, and staff engagements using firm policies and procedures, delegate responsibilities to tax staff, and maximize workflow.
  • Maintain contact with clients throughout the year, possess a thorough knowledge of the client and all facets of their business and industries they serve.
  • Supervise staff, provide on-the-job training, review tax returns and workpapers prepared by staff, and review any changes required or recommendations for improvement with the staff.
  • Motivate tax staff by providing accurate, specific, and timely feedback, evaluating their strengths, weaknesses, and progress continually, and acting as a mentor to less experienced staff.
  • Develop and manage budgets for tax preparation projects, review causes of any significant deviations from predetermined budgets, and prepare engagement letters for approval by partners.
  • Work to develop responsible, trained staff by preparing performance evaluations, maintaining high professional and ethical standards, and ensuring that clients, partners, and tax directors are kept informed of the status of work in progress as well as all important client developments.
  • Communicate progress of engagements, issues, and resolutions to clients, prepare invoices to clients, and communicate details of fees to clients.
  • Assist in departmental or firm administration functions as assigned by the Tax Director/Tax Partners, acquire, develop, and retain clients, and nurture and develop relationships with prospective clients for services performed by the firm.
  • Manage all client engagements, regardless of complexity, in an efficient, timely, and professional manner, communicate with tax directors/partners on a timely basis when issues arise requiring additional expertise, experience, or guidance, and perform complex tax research assignments as requested by Tax Directors/Partners or as determined to meet client needs.
  • Prepare written tax analyses/tax position papers for clients and for dissemination within the department for training purposes, communicate with various taxing authorities regarding tax notices, billings, etc., and draft written responses to notices from taxing authorities as well as review written responses drafted by tax staff prior to sending to taxing authorities.
  • Ensure that tax returns prepared by staff are prepared in accordance with the Internal Revenue Code and applicable state laws and regulations.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or master's degree in accounting. A Bachelor's or Advanced degree in another business discipline may qualify if it includes enough accounting credits to qualify for the CPA exam, JD, MST, or EA.
  • An active certified public accountant's license or other LPC approved certification is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to bring in new business to a CPA firm.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English, verbal and written.
  • Continuing professional education as established by the AICPA and applicable state society, averaging 40 hours annually.
  • Must be a member in good standing with the AICPA and applicable state society.
  • Proficient in use of computers and be familiar with tax software (preferably CCH) and tax research software.
