Position Summary

The RN Clinical Charge Nurse plays a pivotal role in managing and supervising the daily operations of the nursing unit during a designated shift, ensuring the effective and safe delivery of patient care. This position involves direct patient care responsibilities and the leadership of nursing staff.

As a vital member of the healthcare team, the Charge Nurse operates within a clinical framework supported by Nurse Managers and other leadership roles, guided by the WellStar Shared Governance Model. The practice is informed by the WellStar Professional Practice Model, emphasizing evidence-based practices and nursing research. RN competencies are aligned with these models and the WellStar Core Competencies.

The RN Clinical Charge Nurse actively collaborates with an interdisciplinary team of both licensed and unlicensed caregivers to provide personalized, high-quality, and safe patient care. Key expectations include:

  • Clear communication and respect among team members
  • Commitment to personal and team development
It is essential that all RN Clinical Charge Nurses maintain their licensure, demonstrate extensive knowledge, and adhere to the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act, implementing the Scope of Practice and the Code of Ethics as outlined by the American Nurses Association. As part of the patient services team, the Charge Nurse is expected to advocate for patients while adhering to system policies and striving for service excellence. This role requires advanced clinical expertise to ensure the delivery of safe, age-appropriate, and culturally competent patient care.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions

  • Quality Care and Outcomes: Conduct daily rounds on each patient to assess the quality and appropriateness of care, implementing corrective actions as necessary. Oversee the Nursing Process, ensuring individualized care through evidence-based practices and effective coordination.
  • Team Collaboration: Maintain open communication with nursing management regarding care delivery and staff performance. Facilitate interdisciplinary communication and planning to promote safe, quality patient care.
  • Professional Development: Uphold patient and staff confidentiality, ensuring compliance with corporate standards. Serve as a mentor for new nurses, fostering a qualified workforce and a healthy work environment.
  • Evidence-Based Practice: Advocate for nursing research and performance improvement initiatives. Participate in evaluating patient care products and ensure adherence to healthcare policies and standards.
  • Resource Management: Monitor equipment and resource availability to support staff in delivering high-quality care. Assist in staffing plans during unexpected shortages.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program (Associate Degree/Diploma required; Bachelor's Degree preferred)
  • Current RN licensure (Single State or Multi-state Compact)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred
  • Minimum of 1 year nursing experience required; 2 years preferred
  • Strong critical thinking and interpersonal skills
