Job Description:

Campus Title: Art Gallery Manager / Community Engagement Coordinator

Job Type: Part-Time Temporary
Timeframe: 10 Months - Academic Year
Shift: TBD: 15 to 18 hours per week
Regular Days Off: Saturday and Sunday (some evening and weekend hours required)
Supervision Received: Reports to the Chair of the Art Department
Supervision Exercised: Overseeing and directing student staff
Salary: $18,000.00 to $21,600.00 Annually

General Statement of Duties:
This part-time role involves managing the marketing, social media, community partnerships, exhibitions, and recruitment initiatives for the Arno Maris Art Gallery.

Arno Maris Gallery
Established in 1986, the Arno Maris Gallery at Westfield State University honors Arno Maris, a long-serving chair of the Art Department. The Gallery, which began in the hallways of Parenzo Hall, has since moved to its current location in the Ely Campus Center. The Gallery Manager is responsible for overseeing gallery operations and the University’s permanent collection, including planning, installing, and promoting exhibitions, fostering community partnerships, supervising student staff, and managing gallery facilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Essential:
  • Leading the exhibitions program in the Arno Maris Gallery and managing the University Permanent Collection.
  • Researching, curating, and implementing exhibitions that align with the University’s educational mission.
  • Collaborating with the Marketing department to develop a comprehensive social media and communication strategy promoting the Gallery.
  • Maintaining an exhibition calendar and ensuring the Gallery's website and social media platforms are current.
  • Enhancing the reach and reputation of the Arno Maris Gallery through exhibitions and programming.
  • Serving as the primary liaison to the press/public to promote the importance of exhibitions in cultural education.
  • Managing a small team of student employees working in the Gallery.
  • Working closely with the Art Department Chair and the Exhibition Committee to select exhibitions and develop related programs.
  • In consultation with the Exhibitions Committee, developing exhibitions and programs that reflect the University’s mission and contemporary art issues.
  • Maintaining policies and procedures governing the Gallery and overseeing all aspects of the exhibition process.
  • Managing the annual exhibitions and operational budget for the Gallery.
  • Assisting with student recruitment events related to the arts.
Requirements:

Qualifications:
  • B.A. or B.F.A required.
  • Experience in producing marketing and social media materials.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills for building relationships with faculty, staff, artists, and community members.
  • Experience connecting educational curriculums with exhibition programming.
  • Understanding of art handling, conservation, and exhibition design.
  • Experience developing exhibition programming in a gallery or higher education setting.
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • High level of self-initiative and mature judgment in a dynamic environment.
