We are seeking a skilled Lifeguard to join our team at the Valparaiso Family YMCA. As a Lifeguard, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of our members and guests while providing a positive and welcoming atmosphere.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain active surveillance of the pool area and check for hazardous conditions upon arrival.
- Know and review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
- Know, understand, and consistently apply safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code.
- Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Perform chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and take appropriate action.
- Maintain effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
- Attend all staff meetings and in-service training.
- Minimum age of 16. Minimum of 18 years of age and high school degree preferred.
- American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, including CPR Pro and First Aid.
- Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to remain calm during high-stress situations and speak clearly when talking with emergency response personnel.
- Ability to relate and communicate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
The Valparaiso Family YMCA is a dynamic and supportive work environment. As a Lifeguard, you will be working in a variety of environments, including those subject to humidity and dampness. You must be able to lift 50 lbs. and stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time. You must also have a high level of alertness, concentration, and initiative to recognize victims in need.
