The Psychiatric Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) delivers complex psychiatric care under the guidance of a designated psychiatrist.

Responsibilities include assessing, planning, and executing comprehensive psychiatric care, either independently or in collaboration with other healthcare professionals. The role involves directing psychiatric activities, monitoring trends, and suggesting improvements.

Prescribing medications, including antipsychotics, ordering and interpreting laboratory and diagnostic tests, and making referrals in line with their professional scope.

Additional duties include overseeing the work of others as assigned by the supervisor.

Operates under the clinical and administrative oversight of the Medical Director or other delegating physician, exercising significant initiative and independent judgment.

Collaboration with physicians and psychiatrists may also occur through telemedicine.

Key Responsibilities:

Regular attendance is required, with potential for specific shift schedules, rotating shifts, or overtime as per agency policy, along with other assigned duties.

May be required to serve on-call on a rotating basis to meet operational needs.

Functions within the scope of licensure to foster a therapeutic and secure psychiatric environment. Provides both acute and long-term psychiatric care, including daily assessments of mental health status as necessary.

The assessment encompasses diagnosis, treatment, and the development of a care plan, with documentation of acute issues relevant to psychiatric treatment.

Prescribes medications, including antipsychotics, secures timely medication consents, orders laboratory tests, and interprets results.

Refers care decisions outside their licensure and expertise to the treatment team or a Medical Doctor (MD).

Delivers psychiatric care through face-to-face interactions, which includes initial and ongoing assessments for individuals with acute and long-term psychiatric diagnoses; reviews treatment specific to the disease process and updates psychiatric treatment as needed.

Writes prescriptions and conducts medication reviews within the scope of their licensure and training. Reports significant trends or issues to the supervisor and provides recommendations based on their expertise.

Ensures comprehensive psychiatric care by conducting regular psychiatric clinics and rounds. Performs periodic evaluations of hospitalized patients when on-call to assess reported changes in status or condition.

Provides psychiatric diagnoses and reviews positive behavior support plans (PBSP) and/or psychiatric support plans (PSP), including an assessment of all identified risks (e.g., choking, falls, seizures, aggression) and health status, ensuring necessary supports are identified and addressed.

Develops accurate and timely documentation, including annual summaries, usage of chemical restraints, and compliance with policies and procedures.

Additional responsibilities include participating in disaster response and recovery efforts or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may require alternate shift patterns or locations.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Familiarity with methods and procedures in psychiatric nursing, including relevant laws and regulations governing public health and hospital operations.

Understanding of principles and methods for conducting medical evaluations, diagnoses, and treatments.

Knowledge of developing, implementing, and documenting individualized care and treatment plans.

Proficiency in interpreting laboratory analyses and diagnostic imaging.

Competence in patient care and the use of medical diagnostic and treatment tools.

Ability to examine, diagnose, and treat both physical and mental health disorders.

Capability to supervise others providing medical care.
Ability to interact appropriately with individuals with developmental disabilities.
Skill in presenting ideas clearly in both written and oral formats.
Proficiency in preparing and maintaining medical records.
Ability to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams.
