Job Summary:

The LPN will provide direct patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, Physician, or Advanced Practice Nurse. Key Responsibilities:
  • Clinical Process:
    • Conduct patient histories, respond to family inquiries, and differentiate between new and long-term problems.
    • Take vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, height, weight, and head circumference.
    • Perform basic nursing care, including bathing, personal hygiene, dressing, linen changes, positioning, and ambulation.
    • Recognize physical and behavioral changes in patients and perform therapeutic interventions, such as tube care, gastrostomy, and skin care.
    • Respond to alarms on medical equipment and troubleshoot issues.
    • Collect and test specimens, pass NG tubes and catheters, and prepare for monitor setup and peripheral IVs.
  • Organizational Process:
    • Follow infection control protocols and emergency plans.
    • Complete patient assignments and participate in the implementation and documentation of care.
    • Organize workload and collaborate with registered nurses to administer medications and perform assessments.
    • Follow physician orders and nursing directives precisely.
  • Transformational Leadership:
    • Orient children and families to the hospital environment and expected routines.
    • Review medical records and reinforce teaching outlined by registered nurses.
    • Teach families how to administer routine medications at home.
    • Implement aspects of the education plan throughout hospitalization.
    • Recognize and escalate patient care via the chain of command.
  • Structural Empowerment:
    • Refer to physicians and registered nurses as indicated.
    • Perform actions of preventive health care, health maintenance, and patient care under the direction of the delegating registered nurse.
    • Offer extra attention to children who are alone.
    • Complete mandatory education and regulatory requirements.
    • Develop annual goals and a personal education program with the supervisor.
  • Exemplary Professional Practice:
    • Document observations, interventions, teaching, and patient responses accurately.
    • Participate in admission/clinic unit data collection and document on appropriate forms.
    • Document medication administration, including time, route, signature, and patient responses.
    • Accept patient assignments and participate in the implementation and documentation of care.
    • Gather physical and psychological data on patients and families, complete accurate and timely patient assignments, and document accordingly.
  • Safety:
    • Place safety first and utilize the safety axioms.
    • Recognize and respond to patient distress, institute BLS when necessary.
    • Continuously validate and verify information needed for decision making or documentation.
    • Demonstrate competency in basic math calculations and conversions.
    • Promote safety for patients, families, and coworkers.
Requirements:
  • Education:
    • High School Diploma or GED.
    • Completion of a 1-year vocational/technical training program in a related field.
  • Experience:
    • 1 year of related experience.
  • Licenses and Certifications:
    • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) upon hire.
    • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) upon hire.
