The Orthopedic and Neurological Surgery Department is equipped with advanced facilities to cater to a diverse patient demographic, ranging from infants to seniors, addressing a wide array of orthopedic and neurological specialties.

SUMMARY:

This role involves executing preoperative tasks, including the selection and arrangement of surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment. The Surgical Assistant will scrub in and support the surgical team during gowning and gloving procedures, ensuring the provision of instruments, sutures, and other sterile supplies throughout surgical operations. The assistant is also responsible for draping the patient appropriately for the surgical intervention.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Oversee all high-risk and complex cases, implementing necessary actions.
  2. Prepare operating rooms with the requisite instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment.
  3. Assist in the identification, collection, and management of specimens.
  4. Maintain accurate counts of instruments, sutures, and sponges.
  5. Monitor and replenish supplies as needed.
  6. Orient, instruct, and mentor assigned personnel.
  7. Open sterile supplies and set up for surgical procedures.
  8. Decontaminate instruments, supplies, and equipment in accordance with established protocols; handle and store instruments, equipment, and supplies properly.
  9. Communicate effectively with team members, patients, and medical staff to ensure optimal patient care.
  10. Transport patients to and from the operating room; position patients based on the type of surgery.
  11. Conduct biological and chemical monitoring in line with quality assurance standards.
  12. Adhere to organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values, policies, and standards.
  13. Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE: No prior experience required; one (1) year of surgical assistance experience is preferred.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required. Surgical Technician Certification is mandatory. Additional certifications may be necessary depending on departmental requirements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Familiarity with surgical assistance procedures and best practices.
  • Proficiency in sterilization and preparation for various surgical procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety regulations, operational instructions, and procedural manuals.
  • Capability to complete routine reports and correspondence.
  • Effective listening skills to accurately interpret communications and instructions.
  • Strong verbal communication skills for addressing groups of customers or colleagues.
  • Mathematical skills to calculate figures, ratios, and percentages, as well as interpret data visually.
  • Ability to apply common sense to execute detailed written or oral instructions.
  • Problem-solving skills to address issues involving concrete variables in standardized situations.
