Join Oregon State University's Public Safety Department as a Communications Officer, playing a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our community.
Job SummaryWe are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented individual to operate our radio console, dispatch police and public safety officers, and communicate status updates. As a Communications Officer, you will be responsible for monitoring and operating multiple radio frequencies, receiving and processing emergent and non-emergent calls, and maintaining a computerized log of all incidents and contact information.
Key Responsibilities- Monitor and operate radio console using multiple radio frequencies
- Dispatch Police and Public Safety Officers
- Communicate status updates
- Operate multi-line telephone software
- Receive, process and transfer emergent/non-emergent calls and requests for service
- Maintain a computerized log of all incidents and contact information
- High school diploma, or equivalent
- Law Enforcement Data Systems (LEDS) certification, OR ability to obtain within sixty (60) days of hire
- Possess DPSST Telecommunications certification OR ability to obtain within 18 months of hire
- Proficiency with computers and standard office programs including Excel, Word, electronic databases, email, web applications, typing, and data entry
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Follow policies and directives
- Critically think and solve problems
- Attend and successfully complete work-related training
This position is fully on-site and may require work in a confined area, restricted to authorized personnel only. Work in an area with moderate noise levels caused by equipment and radio transmissions; is restricted to workstation for long periods, sometimes in a close work area. Required to work rotating and varied shifts (day, swing and graveyard). Shifts cover 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to include weekends and holidays. Shifts vary between 8, 10 and 12 hours but could be longer due to emergency situations or increased workload.
Decision Making/GuidelinesEmployees must demonstrate an ability to work under little to no supervision at times while effectively making critical decisions that may impact the safety of life and/or property. Utilization of policies and procedures are guides but not all encompassing. Individuals must be able to make split second decisions based on training and resources to minimize civil and criminal liability and ensure the safety of OSU's community.
