GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

This position involves skilled and semi-skilled tasks related to the upkeep, troubleshooting, and repair of landscaping and maintenance machinery, including small gasoline and diesel engines, electrical systems, and compressors. The role requires physical effort and is performed with a degree of independence, while more complex tasks receive additional guidance from a supervisor. The quality of work is monitored throughout the process and upon completion. Responsibilities may include inspecting, assessing, and repairing various types of motorized equipment, ensuring that all work meets established standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Engages in janitorial duties, grounds upkeep, and light construction activities at a City Water Utility Facility.
  • Operates light trucks, tractors, zero-turn mowers, leaf blowers, vacuums, and heavy machinery.
  • Conducts minor plumbing and mechanical repairs.
  • Performs basic carpentry tasks.
  • Mows and edges using both manual and powered tools.
  • Monitors the mowing and trimming of grass and maintains specific areas.
  • Executes skilled gardening and pruning tasks related to the grounds of the Water Utility Facility.
  • Weeds and maintains flower beds.
  • Participates in all aspects of landscape installation and upkeep.
  • Mixes and applies herbicides and fertilizers as needed.
  • Maintains and performs minor repairs on equipment; conducts routine maintenance on grounds machinery.
  • Inspects automatic and mechanical sprinkler systems for functionality.
  • Works from both verbal and written directives.
  • Maintains various Water Utility facility sites, including treatment plants and pumping stations.
  • Diagnoses equipment failures to determine causes before ordering parts, minimizing unnecessary expenditures and downtime.
  • Consults with supervisors regarding warranty details and secures authorization for significant repairs.
  • Reports necessary part replacements to supervisors for procurement.
  • Cleans facility areas as required, including break rooms and restrooms.
  • Ensures adequate supplies of paper goods and cleaning materials are maintained.
  • Assists Operations staff as required.
  • Properly utilizes and returns City-owned tools and manuals.
  • Reports any missing or damaged tools to the designated supervisor.
  • Adheres to all safety, health, and environmental regulations to maintain a safe work environment.
  • May assist in training new employees.
  • May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary.
  • Position designated as Mission Critical by Department Director.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Performs related duties as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE)
  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • One (1) year of experience in general labor or grounds maintenance.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must maintain a valid contact number.
  • May be required to pass specific physical and fit tests.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
  • Familiarity with tools and standard practices in labor operations.
  • Understanding of operational principles and repair techniques for grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Awareness of safety and environmental regulations related to equipment repair.
  • Proficiency in using tools and operating machinery common in the mechanic's field.
  • Ability to effectively perform grounds construction and maintenance tasks.
  • Capability to maintain accurate records.
  • Understanding of safe practices in using hand and power tools.
  • Ability to conduct minor repairs on equipment.
  • Skill in operating motorized equipment.
  • Competence in inspecting equipment for serviceability and diagnosing issues.
  • Ability to follow both written and oral instructions.
  • Capability to read and comprehend service manuals in English and apply that knowledge in maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to interpret sketches and diagrams.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with co-workers and supervisors.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Requires medium to heavy physical work, including walking, lifting, and standing for extended periods.
