Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Grounds Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team at Service Corporation International. As a key member of our cemetery operations team, you will be responsible for operating a variety of heavy equipment and trucks to maintain our grounds and cemetery roads.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate trucks and heavy equipment, including dump trucks, tractors, and backhoes, to perform tasks such as loading, hauling, and unloading equipment and materials.
  • Perform semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of grounds equipment and cemetery roads, including digging ditches and trenches, and hoisting material and tools.
  • Securely open and close interments, entombments, and inurnments, and install memorials and markers.
  • Prepare graves and maintain cemetery grounds, including mowing, chipping, and other small equipment and tool operations.
  • Support cemetery operations by performing tasks such as digging, hoisting, and operating heavy equipment.
  • Inform supervisor of equipment defects or need for repair.
  • Ensure burials, entombments, and inurnments are securely and carefully opened and closed.
  • Set and/or install memorials and markers.
  • Install outer burial containers.
  • Follow Interment Verification Procedures.
  • Conduct 25-foot radius preparation for burials.
  • Adhere to all Company safety rules and universal precautions.
  • Maintain and protect Company assets by performing regular preventive maintenance on machines, equipment, and facilities.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
  • Complete Dignity University courses and other training as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or needed.
Requirements
  • High School degree or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum 6 months working with heavy equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to operate hand-held tools and equipment, including shovels, picks, rakes, sledge hammers, lawn mowers, weed trimmers, and leaf blowers.
  • Ability to operate mechanical equipment, including dump trucks, tractors, utility vehicles, marker trailers, dump trailers, jack hammers, tampers, and backhoes.
  • Ability to accurately use measuring devices, such as tape measures and yard sticks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with fellow associates, contractor personnel, and client families.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical equipment problems.
Work Environment

Work outdoors during all seasons and weather conditions.

Frequent, continuous periods of time standing, up to 6 hours per day.

Climbing stairs to access buildings frequently.

Physical effort requiring manual dexterity, including paperwork, calculators, computers, and phone usage.

Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Working beyond standard hours as the need arises.
