The Clinical Nurse Specialist provides comprehensive nursing care in alignment with the established guidelines and protocols of the healthcare institution.
Key Responsibilities:
- Delivers direct nursing care in accordance with established guidelines and protocols. Develops and oversees patient care plans.
- Observes, records, and communicates patient status as necessary.
- Tracks and documents patient conditions and the effectiveness and promptness of care and interventions.
- Assesses, updates, and modifies care plans to ensure the achievement of intended outcomes.
- Acts as the primary coordinator among various disciplines for seamless patient care.
- Administers prescribed medications and treatments following approved nursing protocols.
- Executes physician and nursing directives.
- Evaluates and coordinates patient discharge planning needs with the healthcare team.
- Identifies educational needs of patients and their families, considering cultural and other specific concerns.
- Provides relevant teaching and educational resources as needed.
- Confirms and documents patient and family comprehension of educational material.
- Pursues professional development through ongoing education and clinical nursing studies.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Educational Qualifications:
- Graduate from an accredited nursing program. BSN is preferred.
Required Certifications:
- Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
- Proof of Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required upon hire.
- Completion of ONS Chemo/Bio course within two years of employment if working in units administering chemotherapy.
- For roles in Adult/Combined Emergency Departments, ACLS certification is required upon hire or within one year of employment.
- For Emergency Department roles, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification from AHA is required upon hire or within one year of employment.
- In Dedicated Trauma Centers, completion of Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC - adult) or Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC - pediatric) is required upon hire or within 24 months of employment in the Emergency Department.
Work Complexity:
- Requires critical thinking abilities, sound judgment, and the capacity to work independently.
- Must be capable of functioning in a high-pressure environment and taking appropriate actions.
Experience Requirements:
- Minimum of one year of current acute care RN experience in a hospital setting is required for acute care roles.
- Minimum of one year of current acute care RN experience and/or skilled nursing facility (SNF) experience is required for SNF roles.
- Minimum of one year of current acute care RN experience and/or rehabilitation experience is required for rehab roles.
- Minimum of one year of current acute care RN experience and/or Emergency Department (ED) experience is required for ED roles.
- Licensed military RN experience will be considered.
Physical Demands:
- Requires full range of motion, including handling and lifting patients, manual dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
- Requires prolonged standing and walking.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing within normal ranges.
- Must be able to work under stressful conditions and irregular hours.
- Exposure to communicable diseases and/or bodily fluids is expected.
- Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Physical demands exceed those for Light Work.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Adheres to standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
