Job Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated Research Technician to join the Weston Laboratory at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute. This role involves executing essential laboratory functions, gathering data for studies focused on the origins of neurodevelopmental disorders associated with early-onset epilepsy, and evaluating innovative therapeutic methods. The technician will engage with rodent models that simulate human diseases, oversee animal care, perform surgical procedures, and monitor cerebral activity through both electrical and optical techniques. Additionally, the technician will be tasked with the operation and upkeep of experimental apparatus.

Key Responsibilities


• Conduct general laboratory operations and maintain accurate records of experimental findings.

• Collaborate with team members to ensure effective communication and project progress.

• Manage time efficiently while working independently on assigned tasks.

• Learn and apply techniques for handling rodents and performing necessary surgeries.

• Utilize computer software for data analysis and record-keeping.

• Adapt to a dynamic research environment and contribute to ongoing projects.

Required Qualifications


• Strong communication skills and the ability to work well with diverse teams.

• Basic laboratory experience, including skills in chemical handling and preparation.

• Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to accuracy in experimental procedures.

• Ability to remain at a lab bench for extended periods, either sitting or standing.

• Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Preferred Qualifications


• Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience, or a related discipline.

• Passion for advancing neuroscience through meticulous research.

• Proven organizational and teamwork skills.

• Previous research experience is advantageous.
