Criminal Appeals Paralegal II Job Description

The Criminal Appeals Bureau (CAB) of The Legal Aid Society is a leading post-conviction public defender in New York City, providing holistic, client-centered representation to over 1,000 individuals with misdemeanor, felony, and homicide convictions annually.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist Legal Aid trial attorneys and clients with filing notices of appeal and securing assignment of appellate counsel in Kings County and other counties, as needed.
  • Identify sentenced clients to ensure that notices of appeal are filed in appropriate cases, communicate with assigned attorneys, draft and file relevant legal documents, confirm appellate counsel assignment, and contact court personnel as necessary.
  • Support CAB as needed, including preparing and filing motions and briefs for attorneys, obtaining and organizing court records, corresponding with clients, and preparing cases for closure.
  • Review data and reports of upcoming recent dispositions and assist attorneys in identifying cases suitable for filing notices of appeal.
  • Draft and file notices of appeal and, if necessary, documents securing assignment of counsel.
  • Track cases and enter progress into Legal Aid's case management system.
  • Communicate with clients and open new cases on the case management system.
  • Report on trends and issues occurring within the courts that impact clients' rights to file notices of appeal and secure counsel on appeal.
  • Assist attorneys with filing briefs and motions, ensuring proper formatting and adherence to court specifications.
  • Obtain and organize court files and other records.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree or paralegal certificate from an ABA-accredited school.
  • Excellent computer and word processing skills, particularly Microsoft Word and a PDF program.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • High degree of professionalism and strong attention to detail.
  • Highly motivated with a willingness to work as a team and adapt to changing practice needs.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to interact effectively and independently with courts and related criminal justice agencies, as well as Legal Aid attorneys, paralegals, and support staff.
  • Notary Public or willingness to become one is required.
  • Experience in and/or commitment to advocacy on behalf of low-income individuals and people of color is essential.
  • Some knowledge of New York criminal law and procedures is preferred.
  • Proficiency in a language other than English is desirable but not required.
  • Ability to commit to a minimum of two years is required.

The Legal Aid Society offers a competitive salary range of $57,174 - $87,568, depending on qualifications, and a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, paid vacation, disability, and life insurance. The Society is a qualified employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program and offers assistance with loan repayments for New York residents.
