Advanced Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant Program

Hennepin Healthcare offers an exceptional opportunity for Physician Assistants to enhance their expertise through our Emergency Medicine Postgraduate Training Program. This program is designed for PAs to assess, diagnose, and manage patients facing various health challenges, adhering to established protocols approved by our department.
This rigorous, 13-month curriculum combines theoretical knowledge with practical clinical experience in emergency medicine, equipping graduates with the necessary skills to excel as competent emergency medicine physician assistants. Participants will collaborate with experienced Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) and physician residents under the guidance of our emergency medicine faculty.
During the program, PAs will engage in off-service rotations to broaden their specialty experience relevant to emergency medicine, practicing under the supervision of APPs, residents, and faculty. Monthly hands-on skills workshops and simulation case scenarios will further enhance their training. Graduates will also achieve certifications in ACLS, PALS, and ATLS.
Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a certificate and may have the opportunity to work at Hennepin Healthcare, contingent upon available positions.
These roles come with benefits and a compensation package equivalent to that of a PGY-1 physician resident.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver comprehensive primary and acute care services to both adult and pediatric patients within the Emergency Department.
- Conduct initial and ongoing evaluations of patients' medical, physical, and psychosocial conditions.
- Gather and assess health and medical histories; perform physical examinations and identify health risks.
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation of observations, interventions, care plans, referrals, and follow-ups.
- Develop appropriate differential diagnoses based on comprehensive assessments.
- Identify individual, family, or community needs and formulate care and education plans.
- Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests, including point-of-care ultrasound, and administer therapeutic treatments and procedures.
- Make suitable referrals to other healthcare professionals and community organizations.
- Contribute to ongoing educational initiatives for medical and nursing staff.
Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
- Master's degree from an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Valid Physician Assistant license in the State of Minnesota.
- National PA certification from the NCCPA.
- DEA certification.
