As a Substation Protection and Control Engineer, you will be pivotal in the design, analysis, and implementation of protection and control systems for high-voltage substations. Your expertise will be essential in ensuring the secure and efficient operation of substation equipment, safeguarding vital assets, and enhancing the overall reliability of our electrical infrastructure.
- Protection System Design: Create comprehensive protection schemes for high-voltage substations, encompassing relay settings, fault studies, coordination, and scheme logic to protect equipment and personnel from electrical faults.
- Control System Engineering: Design and execute control systems for substation equipment, ensuring synchronized and coordinated operation within the larger power grid.
- Commissioning and Testing: Collaborate with the commissioning and testing lead on projects related to protection and control systems, validating their performance and compliance with industry standards.
- Fault Analysis: Perform fault studies and simulations to evaluate the response of protection systems during various fault scenarios, identifying potential weaknesses and suggesting enhancements.
- Relay Configuration: Program and set up protective relays and control devices, ensuring precise and dependable responses to abnormal system conditions.
- Substation Automation: Incorporate intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) and automation systems into substation designs, improving operational efficiency and remote monitoring capabilities.
- Regulatory Compliance: Stay informed about relevant industry standards, such as NERC, IEEE, and IEC, ensuring that protection and control designs comply with applicable regulations.
- Project Coordination: Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including substation engineers, project managers, and technicians, to deliver comprehensive protection and control solutions within larger utility projects.
- Troubleshooting and Support: Provide technical assistance during substation operations, maintenance, and troubleshooting activities, aiding in the resolution of complex issues.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to enhance protection and control system designs, optimize settings, and implement best practices to boost system reliability and performance.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline; Master's degree preferred.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in substation protection and controls engineering, particularly in high-voltage applications.
- Thorough understanding of protective relays, IEDs, control schemes, and communication protocols utilized in substations.
- Familiarity with power system protection practices, fault analysis, and coordination principles.
- Proficiency in relevant software tools for protection and control system design, simulation, and configuration.
- Knowledge of substation automation concepts and integration with SCADA systems.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
- Excellent communication skills to articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- P.E. (Professional Engineer) license or equivalent certification is preferred.
- Willingness to travel to project sites as necessary.
