Job Title: Perinatal Safety Specialist RN

Our comprehensive range of medical services includes trauma services, heart and vascular care, emergency services, surgery, maternity care, cancer care, and diagnostic imaging.

Job Summary:

The Perinatal Safety Specialist RN is responsible for implementing, promoting, supporting, and overseeing perinatal patient safety and quality of care initiatives and programs. This specialized nursing role combines clinical expertise with a focus on patient safety to provide high-quality care and support to pregnant women and their families, adhering to departmental, institutional, regional, and Federal clinical and ethical standards.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Ensure all care providers on Maternal Child Health adhere to national clinical standards and principles and practice of safety.
  2. Serve as a patient safety advocate and clinical role model in perinatal nursing obstetrics.
  3. Keep staff up to date on Perinatal Safety Initiatives, including education, training, implementation, and policies.
  4. Participate in patient safety or administrative rounding.
  5. Presents patient and staff safety concerns to appropriate clinical forums.
  6. Participate in and contribute to departmental performance review activities by identifying issues and assisting with gathering and evaluating data, including corporate data entry.
  7. Assist and support the healthcare team when an adverse event or untoward outcome occurs.
  8. Develop and support the implementation of education/action plans to address events that are reported in the event reporting system.
  9. Implement and support patient safety and quality of care initiatives.
  10. Collaborate with clinical and administrative leadership to deliver survey results to participants.
  11. Promote, assist, and support competency-based education.
  12. Perform periodic follow-up to confirm that clinicians have completed their education.
  13. Implement and support Perinatal Safety initiatives as identified by Clinical Leadership.
  14. Monitor clinical outcomes.
  15. Abstract, record, analyze, and report Perinatal Safety data per CommonSpirit Health guidelines.
  16. Assess the documentation of charts reviewed and provide feedback to clinicians.
  17. Encourage staff to identify and report adverse events and near-misses.
  18. Perform collaborative reviews of adverse occurrences and near-misses. Incorporate findings into educational efforts.
  19. Participate in Event Investigation Analysis (EIA).
  20. Coordinate and evaluate briefing, debriefing, and analysis of selected charts with healthcare team members.
  21. Contribute to Fetal Monitor (EFM) strip reviews and provide staff with feedback on findings.
Requirements:
  • Required: Bachelor's Nursing.
  • Preferred: Master's or higher.
  • A minimum of 5 years as a clinician in Women's Services.
  • A minimum of 2 years of project experience in Women and Infants Perinatal Safety.
  • Experience with quality improvement/process improvement techniques, project/program management experience, required.
  • Current RN License in applicable State.
  • Certification in one of the following: CCRN-NEO, C-EFM, RN-BC MCN, RN-BC-PERI, RNC [OB, GYN, NEONATAL], RNC-LRN, RNC-MNN, RNC-NIC, RNC-OB.
  • BLS.
  • NRP within 90 days.
