Job Summary

Educational Background

Required: High school diploma or GED.

Preferred: Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Security Management or a related discipline.

Professional Experience

Required: Six months in a customer service-oriented position demonstrating strong communication and conflict resolution skills.

Preferred: One year of experience in roles such as Police Officer, Public Safety Officer, Corrections, School Security, Hospital Security, Corporate Security, or Military Service. Experience in a comparable environment is advantageous.

Certifications and Licenses

Required: Valid State of Michigan driver's license at the time of hire, AND eligibility under Trinity Health liability insurance guidelines with an acceptable driving record.

Preferred: Certification from the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) or equivalent. First Aid - (FIRSTAID/CPR Certification). Certification as a Security Police Officer under Public Act 330.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Minimum: No criminal record. Good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation. Physical, mental, and emotional capability to perform duties. Ability to pass psychological and medical evaluations prior to employment. Proficient in operating communication equipment. Ability to maintain satisfactory work performance and attendance. Capacity to complete training in Chemical Agent Sprays, handcuffs/restraints, Pressure Point Control Tactics (PPCT), Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI), and other defensive techniques. Excellent communication and customer service abilities. Capable of thriving in a fast-paced environment, prioritizing tasks, and effectively addressing customer concerns. Problem-solving skills and the ability to devise constructive alternatives to resolve issues.
Training and Credentials:

Minimum:
  • Successfully complete internal Field Training Program
  • Complete and pass IAHSS Basic Certification (to be completed within the first 6 months of employment)
  • Successfully complete CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) Training (to be completed within the first 6 months of employment)
  • Successfully complete PPCT (Pressure Point Control Tactics) Training (to be completed within the first 6 months of employment)
  • Successfully complete CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) Training (to be completed within the first 6 months of employment)
Technical Proficiency

Familiarity with standard desktop and Windows-based systems, including email, e-learning platforms, intranet, and general computer navigation. Ability to utilize other software necessary for performing essential functions.
Physical and Mental Requirements

Minimum: Ability to hear speech, distinguish sounds, and communicate effectively. Capable of balancing, bending, climbing, crawling, crouching, kneeling, reaching, sitting, squatting, standing, twisting, walking, and pushing wheelchairs. Near and far vision capabilities. Ability to routinely lift or carry up to 30 lbs, and occasionally up to 50 lbs (20% of the time). Ability to push or pull over 50 lbs occasionally (20% of the time). Manual dexterity is essential. Ability to stand and walk for 80 to 95% of the time. Required to wear a two-way radio at all times. Ability to perform detailed tasks with interruptions (50% of the time). Capacity to engage physically with agitated or violent individuals using trained techniques.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Intervenes with disorderly individuals using non-violent crisis intervention techniques prior to physical intervention.
  • Assists nursing staff with patient restraints and management of combative patients as clinically ordered.
  • Conducts vehicle parking lot patrols; provides security escorts as assigned and adheres to procedures related to parking assignments and institutional policies.
  • Greets, directs, and assists customers, visitors, patients, and colleagues throughout the organization, including emergency and patrolled areas.
  • Facilitates wayfinding and guidance to promote our mission philosophy. Escorts patients, visitors, and colleagues to and from their vehicles as necessary. Directs customers to appropriate areas of the facility. Assists with the location and delivery of wheelchairs upon request.
  • Promotes a positive image of Trinity Health by being knowledgeable about services, policies, and community involvement. Stays informed about current events within the organization.
  • Provides insights based on observations and communication regarding security-sensitive issues and awareness of suspicious activities.
  • Accurately assesses incidents requiring a security report, interviewing involved individuals and documenting as necessary.
  • Responds to security alarms and provides necessary assistance.
  • Coordinates work activities with colleagues to foster a positive team environment and achieve departmental goals. Participates in continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Upon authorization and completion of training, may carry chemical agent spray while performing job functions.
  • Interacts with law enforcement representatives at various levels as required.
