Job Overview

Position Summary:

The primary objective of the Fleet Safety Manager role is to collaborate with General Managers, Regional Operations Leaders, Regional Safety Directors, Transportation Managers, Operations Managers, Supervisors, and Drivers to minimize the risk of accidents and injuries. This is achieved by establishing fleet safety policies and procedures that comply with Federal, State, and local regulations. This position reports directly to the Director of Fleet Safety and works closely with Fleet Safety, Safety, and Operations teams to deliver training and support to site Fleet leadership and drivers following incidents or accidents, during onboarding, and throughout safety management processes. Additionally, the role entails monitoring key safety performance metrics and providing feedback to relevant management personnel.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Investigate issues affecting fleet safety and implement effective solutions.
  • Train drivers on proper pre-trip and post-trip inspections while assessing performance across the region.
  • Conduct ride-alongs and monitoring activities to ensure adherence to Federal, State, and local laws, as well as company policies.
  • Review and analyze driver scorecards to pinpoint issues, collaborating with managers and drivers to rectify performance deficiencies.
  • Assist in creating standard operating procedures that serve as training tools and operator guides for plants.
  • Provide guidance to transportation managers and supervisors on coaching drivers exhibiting unsafe behaviors identified through onboard cameras, HOS violations, roadside inspections, incident reports, and citations.
  • Execute targeted DOT-style audits, communicate findings to management, and work with plant management to formulate corrective action plans, followed by follow-up audits to ensure effectiveness.
  • Develop training programs for transportation staff to conduct self-audits aimed at enhancing performance.
  • Oversee safety management systems, onboard cameras, and other technologies to address critical driving events, reviewing driver DVIRs and related documentation for accuracy, and providing feedback to promote improved documentation practices.
  • Collaborate with plants and drivers to ensure transportation managers, supervisors, and drivers are well-trained in interacting with driver behavior, FMCSA, DOT violations, recording events, citations, incidents, and necessary retraining.
  • Respond to driver accidents or incidents, maintaining effective communication with managers, supervisors, drivers, law enforcement, customers, and the public, demonstrating professionalism and commitment to safety.
  • Generate and distribute various standard and ad hoc reports to appropriate management levels.
  • Participate as a member of the Vehicle Accident Review Board and Safety Committee for the assigned area.
  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert for local fleet safety and regulatory issues.
  • Assist the Corporate DOT Compliance Manager and Corporate Fleet Technology Operations with Federal, State, and local matters as needed.
  • Actively engage in company-wide driver processes and initiatives as required.
  • Monthly car allowance provided.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in transportation, safety, or a related business field preferred.
  • 5 - 8 years of professional experience in DOT safety management within a manufacturing or transportation context.
  • Proven track record in developing and executing fleet safety programs that effectively reduce work-related accidents and injury costs.
  • Experience in a unionized environment.
  • Ability to foster effective business relationships with transportation management and lead through positive influence while coaching for success.
  • Familiarity with event recorders, ELD systems, and safety management programs.
  • Proficient in accident analysis or willing to complete a highway accident course within six months.
  • Capable of investigating highway accidents to identify root causes and develop corrective and preventive measures.
  • Able to work at heights of 20 feet with appropriate PPE.
  • A Class A CDL with tanker endorsement is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Experience in DOT enforcement is advantageous.
  • Ability to perform under pressure.
  • Willingness to travel frequently, approximately 50% of the time.
  • Work may be required across all shifts, including some weekends.
  • Above-average computer skills in a networked environment, with proficiency in MS Office products.

Language Proficiency:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret Federal, State, and local regulations, technical training journals, and diagrams. Effective communication skills with managers, supervisors, drivers, law enforcement, customers, and the public are essential for fulfilling responsibilities and addressing common inquiries. Capable of developing presentations for delivery to groups and management.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Competence in computing rates, ratios, and percentages, as well as interpreting graphs and diagrams.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent work in hot, cold, wet, loud, and dirty environments.
  • Regular exposure to outdoor elements.
