School Health Specialist

The School Nurse is a vital member of the Granville County Schools team, responsible for identifying and treating health disorders among students, providing instruction in the maintenance of good health and disease prevention, and evaluating the physical conditions of students. This role requires discretionary judgment and analysis, with decisions impacting the individual child and others.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and implement policies, procedures, and work standards for the school health program.
- Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies affecting the delivery of school health services.
- Initiate program changes as needed to ensure the effective delivery of health services.
- Manage program allotments efficiently and prepare health reports for supervisors, the board of education, and the health department.
- Collaborate with other child-support agencies to design and provide a comprehensive school health program.
- Negotiate professional and medical services essential to the school health program.
- Provide first aid care and medically prescribed services to students and staff.
- Maintain the security of school health supplies and serve as a resource person on health issues.
- Provide staff development on health-related topics for school staff and volunteers.
- Screen and conduct health appraisals for students and staff, and provide follow-up evaluations as required.
- Recommend corrective action where problems are identified and conduct home visits when necessary.
- Correspond with parents on health needs of children and record immunizations, health findings, and other relevant health data.
- The credentialing standard for school nursing in North Carolina is licensure as a registered nurse (RN) and national school nurse certification within three years of hire.
- Considerable knowledge of medical disorders and treatment, child growth and development, public health problems, and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health and social service agencies.
- Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services, as well as the school organization and community served.
- Ability to identify abnormal growth and development and symptoms of disease, coordinate and facilitate services between the school, local health agency, and other community resources, and develop and maintain health records on students.
This employee must hold a BS in nursing and be certified by the NBCSN or meet these requirements within three years of employment to avoid termination.
