Position Overview

The City of San Diego Ethics Commission is in search of a Chief Ethics Officer.

This role is pivotal for the Commission's overall effectiveness, serving as an independent department head who oversees a dedicated team of City employees committed to upholding transparency, accountability, and trust within local governance.

The Chief Ethics Officer will report to a board of seven volunteer Commissioners and will lead a team that includes three attorneys, an auditor, and a program manager responsible for training and administration.



Work Environment

Hybrid Work Model:
The Commission staff operates from a downtown San Diego office 2 to 3 days each week, with the flexibility to work remotely for the remainder of the week.

This role is highly visible, requiring the Chief Ethics Officer to represent the Commission at public forums, engage with the media, and communicate directly with the community.

It is crucial for the Chief Ethics Officer to consistently advocate for integrity, transparency, and accountability.



Key Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate independence while recognizing the interconnectedness of local government.
  • Work effectively in both litigation and advisory roles, maintaining a nonpartisan approach.
  • Take principled stances, even when they may not align with popular opinion among elected officials.
  • Understand the long-term implications of decisions on community welfare.


Transition Period

This position will include a transition phase with the current Chief Ethics Officer to ensure a thorough training and handover process.

The Commission is looking to finalize the appointment of the new Chief Ethics Officer by the designated timeline, ensuring a smooth transition.
