This position is located at the Department of Veterans Affairs, VA Medical Center Newington Connecticut Campus, in the Facility Management Service Line. The incumbent will serve as the Lead Boiler Plant Operator, responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of the boiler plant. The incumbent will also lead a team of employees in performing work typical of the Trades and Labor occupations listed below.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee the operation and maintenance of the boiler plant, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
- Lead a team of employees in performing work, including scheduling training and maintaining individual training records.
- Coordinate leave requests with employees to avoid disruption in work conditions.
- Make recommendations for leave approval on an individual and schedule basis.
- Assist in the development of service and preventive maintenance contracts.
- Work closely with new installations, in-house projects, inspection and review of project blueprints, inspection of contractor submittals, and review of new equipment and material submitted by vendors.
- Responsible for the Preventive Maintenance Program, including all associated equipment, routine tasks, and inventory management.
- Assume responsibilities as assigned during periods when the Boiler Plant Supervisor is not present or on duty.
- Assume additional responsibilities and duties as Shop or Medical Center needs dictate or at the discretion of the Supervisor or FMS Management.
- Willingness to work odd hours, including weekends and shift work, as well as snow removal duties when necessary.
- Knowledgeable of and ensures that all applicable regulatory procedures, practices, and standards are maintained according to policy.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- May be required to serve a probationary period.
- Subject to background/security investigation.
- Pre-employment physical required.
- Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
- Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
- Participation in the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program is a requirement for all Veterans Health Administration Health Care Personnel (HCP).
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Experience: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
Screen-Out ElementYour qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen-out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.
