About the Organization: NAMI San Diego & Imperial Counties (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is a nonprofit entity dedicated to providing complimentary education, support services, and advocacy aimed at enhancing the quality of life for individuals impacted by mental health conditions.
Key Responsibilities: The primary function of this role is to support the effective operation of the San Diego County Peer-Run Support Warmline, which operates daily from 3:30 PM to 11:00 PM. This position is remote, necessitating internet access and a laptop. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, managing live phone interactions, promptly returning voice messages, gathering and inputting demographic data, documenting calls in the database, and offering suitable resources. The role also involves training, mentoring, and serving as a role model for peers who may volunteer on the support line. Work Schedule: Up to 12 hours per week, between 3:30 PM and 11:00 PM, seven days a week.
Essential Duties:
- Handling live phone calls using a peer support methodology.
- Responding swiftly to voicemail messages.
- Collecting and entering demographic information accurately.
- Documenting interactions in the database efficiently.
- Providing relevant resources to callers.
- Employing recovery-oriented language.
- Mentoring and guiding new peers and volunteers.
- Performing additional tasks as assigned.
Reporting Structure: This position reports directly to the Warmline Program Coordinator.
Physical Requirements: The physical demands outlined here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully execute the essential functions of this role. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with qualified disabilities to perform these functions.
- Extended periods of sitting at a desk and utilizing a computer.
- Extended periods of standing and walking.
- Occasional lifting of up to 15 pounds.
Qualifications:
- Must reside in California for this remote role.
- Completion of a Peer Support Specialist training program or two years of supervised experience in peer support within the public behavioral health sector.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to connect with peers through active listening and problem-solving strategies.
- Strong problem-solving abilities, time management skills, and understanding of personal and professional boundaries.
- Proven experience working with diverse populations and a commitment to teamwork.
- Advanced technological skills, including proficiency in computer applications, cloud-based phone systems, and web-based platforms such as Zoom and Teams. Competency in data entry and Microsoft Office applications.
- Able to mentor fellow team members with enthusiasm.
- Understanding of professional boundaries and confidentiality.
- Self-identified as a Peer and grounded in personal recovery.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical standards.
- Familiarity with San Diego County's mental health services and current social services available in the area.
- Reliable internet access and consistent attendance.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
