Job Summary

As an Environmental Health Specialist with the Jefferson County Department of Health, you will play a critical role in ensuring the health and safety of our community. Your responsibilities will include conducting health inspections of facilities, sites, and equipment to ensure compliance with public health rules and regulations. You will also be responsible for communicating with property owners, collecting data samples, and identifying hazards to ensure the overall level of compliance for inspection sites.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct health inspections of facilities, sites, and equipment to ensure compliance with public health rules and regulations.
  • Communicate with property owners, collect data samples, and identify hazards to ensure the overall level of compliance for inspection sites.
  • Assign public health scores after completion of inspections to rate the overall level of compliance for inspection sites.
  • Collect various samples from inspection sites to identify relevant public health violations.
  • Condemn or interrupt the use of items/equipment that are not in compliance with applicable rules/regulations/standards for health and safety reasons.
  • Recommend corrective action for residents/owners/operators/stakeholders to bring them into compliance with applicable health laws, rules, and regulations.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Completed at least 30 college credit hours in natural sciences such as biology, chemistry, microbiology, or related field such as engineering, geology, or physics.
  • Experience working with a public health department/agency.
Work Environment

Work is conducted both indoors in an office setting as well as regular field visits to external places of business, residences, and construction worksites.

Physical Demands

Job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional periods of standing, walking, lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
